Here I go answering my own email...
hehe, maybe it's mp3blaster.
Following the instructions here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/asoundrc.php
I was able to play a wav file out my soundcard.
Do I require some sort of .conf file for mp3blaster
("Failed to open device")? Don't see one in ls -a
/home/<user>.
