System is kernel 2.6.9, recently built from stage 1, using Reiserfs.
Very solid and stable for last two weeks.

All packages so far have emerged nicely, with two exceptions, apache and
xorg-x11. Both failed with missing file/directory errors in the
/var/tmp/portage tree.

I built apache from the distribution tarfile in order to get a web
server up and running, no problem there.

It turns out the error when building xorg-x11 is specific to the
fontconfig component, which also fails when emerged separately. The
error is "cannot create regular file". After the failure, both the
source file and target directory are present in the temporary tree.

Partial output follows:
----------
  /bin/install -c -m 644 local.conf
/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image//etc/fonts/local.conf; \
fi; fi; fi
/bin/sh ./mkinstalldirs
/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image//usr/lib/pkgconfig
 /bin/install -c -m 644 ./local.conf
/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image//etc/fonts/local.conf
mkdir -p -- /var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image//usr/lib/pkgconfig

/bin/install: cannot create regular file
`/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image//etc/fonts/local.conf': No such
file or directory

message.
----------

Here are the source file and target directory in the temporary tree:
-r--r--r-- 1 root portage 282 Dec 8 08:01
/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/work/fontconfig-2.2.3/local.conf

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 112 Dec 8 08:07
/var/tmp/portage/fontconfig-2.2.3/image/etc/fonts

I'm thinking about building X from the distribution tarfiles, but emerge
is really nicer with respect to maintenance and I would like to use it
instead.
