I didn't expect there was, but I was hoping there was still support for the old
syntax.  Obviously not.  Anyway, thanks for the nudge -- I just verfied that
replacing it with
   routes-eth1=( "default via 64.166.164.54"  )
does the trick, and I'm back in business.
