Did you also try to replace it with the contents of the other file and
how does the Xorg.0.log look now?

Daniel,

I tried replacing the original settings too and the effect is the same. The relevant lines in Xorg.0.log are still

(II) config/hal: Adding input device SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: always reports core events
(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Device: "/dev/input/event4"
(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Found x and y absolute axes
(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Found absolute touchpad
(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Found mouse buttons
(II) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Configuring as mouse
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" (type: MOUSE)

Justin,

I'll give 1.5.3 a go this evening and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion!

Dragos.
