Looking for a way to install samba-3.0.23b with a very recent patch
from samba developers that is supposed to solve a problem I'm having
with the SID code in current samba-3.0.23a.

I have compiled the version I'm told I need but it looks like a very
complicated thing to try to install and run outside of the emerge
method. In fact I suspect it nearly gauranteed to cause problems
here.

Anyone know if something is available in version 3.0.23b?

You can just rename the ebuild and put it into your overlay until the gentoo
samba developers get to it.

Stefan

That sailed right over my thick skull. Can you elaborate, at least a
little please?

Rename the ebuild of 3.0.23a to 3.0.23b and then what?

I'm not on a gentoo box now, so it should be something like that:
# mv samba-3.0.23a.ebuild/path/to/an/overlay/the_category-for_samba/samba/samba-
3.0.23b.ebuild
# ebuild samba-3.0.23b.ebuild digest
# emerge -u samba

If you don't have an overlay yet take a look at:

Something here is a bit confusing... I don't understand how renaming
one version of samba to another does much for me. I need the actual
new version installed, not the old version renamed and installed as
the new version.

Unless something very magic happens at:
  # ebuild samba-3.0.23b.ebuild digest

I'd be installing the old version under a new name....

I just am not getting what role the renaming plays I guess.

Yikes, I'm not very familiar with what ebuilds are.....
Please disregard the above post ... I'm having a bad case of pin-head
syndrome this morning....

After setting up the overlay, moving (renaming) the ebuild as
suggested. Running ebuild samba-3.0.23b.ebuild digest

Results in files being downloaded and deposited in
  /usr/portage/distfiles.

Shouldn't these be going to the overlay? (/usr/local/portage/distfiles)

No, there is only one $DISTDIR. Once you've created the digest, you can
emerge the new version as normal.

Portage download the file samba-{the_version_in_the_name_of_the_ebuild}.
The ebuild file just contains commands and parameters to compile samba, it
doesn't contain the source. Often, new versions don't need change in
parameters/commands.

Unless something very magic happens at:
> # ebuild samba-3.0.23b.ebuild digest

The digest is just a security option (this create the md5 of the file).

When it is possible portage uses the name of the ebuild to determine what
version of a package to download. So if the build process is unchanged and
the revision naming from upstream is sane then renaming the ebuild should be
sufficient to make a revision bump. This of course implies that you will be
running software that isn't tested by the Gentoo maintainer and hence Gentoo
provides no warranties...

I don't recall that it provides any warranties anyway LOL
