How can I go about running a VM on gentoo that runs win XP pro?
I do have a couple of WinXP pro licenses but hoped there might be a
ready made VMappliance I can just download and fireup.
I have the pay for vmware for linux installed.

I don't understand the question.
You install VMware.
You start VMware.
In VMware, you install WinXP.

Download Windows XP? Do you actually assume, that somebody
will now post a link to some Warez site, or what?

You can hunt here and maybe find something:
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
For example,
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/649
Is a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition Virtual
Appliance
Why does everyone always assume people are pirates or in search of
warez. I don't see why someone couldn't put up a copy of XP or Vista or
whatever that is unactivated, yet all installed and ready to go
(everything but the CPU is emulated in VMWare, so it could be possible,
and even the XP CPU is a generic x86 compatible, not like it's optimized
AFAIK). Then one could just plop in their key to activate it for reals
to get "WGA certifed".
I'm sure you can find an XP CD lying around your work or ask someone
with an MSDN subscription too.
A word of advice, once you have it all installed in your VM and setup
the way you like, I would take a snapshot so you can always revert to
it. Or backup the VM directory. I like to use an XP VM on my XP host
just to go to sites where they try to install something to make you get
the content, etc.

Because, as far as I can tell (and IANAL), that would be illegal. I don't have
a license to distribute Windows XP.

hm, don't know about the distribution side, but you can sure install any
version of Vista you like, from the one Vista DVD without a license /
activation. Only the one you have a license for can run for more than
30 days (or some number) though.

Apparantly, after downloading `Warez', I'd then use the License
numbers off the Full WinXP Pro cds I posted about to run them.
What a concept...Very clever pirate indeed.
Apparently Daevid hadn't gotten his post on line before you responed.

Does this mean that if my hypothetical imaginary friend were to install Vista
on VMWare (I assume that this is VMWare Workstation, not VMWare Player,
right?) and take a snapshot of it, then it will always stay active? Or will
Vista fire up, read the current date and use that to determine if the trial
period has expired?
Just curious.

yes, workstation.

my hypothetical imaginary friend used to do that with microsoft office.
And instead of shutting down XP in VMware he'd just kill it, and re-use
the same snapshot next time. Thus every time he opened office, the
"uses left before activation" was always 29...
> Just curious.
me2. Haven't tried it with Vista, but I assume it would use the real
date.
