That part fails here:
 # mysql -uroot -p
Enter password: <root passwd entered>

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for
    user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

==============

But trying from my user shell:
I at least can log in.

   Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
   Your MySQL connection id is 9
   Server version: 5.0.44-log Gentoo Linux mysql-5.0.44-r2

   Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

But when I try to run the command (wrapped for mail):

  mysql> create database bookmarks;
  ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for
          user 'reader'@'localhost' to database 'bookmarks'

The help offered inside the mysql shell doesn't appear very helpful to
me.

But apparently I need to start over some how.
