[gentoo-user] graphical ssh-enabled file system browser?

Hi,
   Is there a good, graphical ssh-enabled file system browser that I
could set up on my wife and son's machines that would allow them to
move files back and forth between machines without them having to
understand ssh and escape characters? They use a lot of spaces in
their file names so I'd like something that had two window panes
(local & remote) that would allow them to drag files in either
direction and do the hard stuff for them.

   I use WinSCP on my WinXP machine. It works really great for this
purpose. Something like that which is Linux based would be great for
them but I cannot yet find anythign in the Online Package Database.
Probably I'm just not searching with the right terms yet. Sorry.

What desktop environment do you use? KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, ... ?

Konqueror (or possibly Nautilus?) and Krusader are options for this. I'm sure 
there are many more.

Krusader (K is for KDE) can do it, it's something like Total Commander on
Windows. The remote computer is opened with ctrl+N, selecting protocol
called fish:// and filling hostname, login/pass. You can store that info as
quick bookmark too.

Konqueror with the fish:// protocol would do nicely..That's what I use..;-)

If you are running KDE, just use a sftp URL in Konqueror.

Can you mention *any* advantage of fish:// over sftp:// ? sftp supports 
resuming an incomplete download. I don't think fish does that. I haven't 
tested it though.

   A few comments/responses:

1) We do not run KDE.

2) Some of the machines have Gnome but none of us like Nautilus very
much for this solution:

a) It does not, as far as we can tell, support a dual pane layout for
easy file transfer. Rather it seems to require us to open two Nautilus
windows and transfer between two windows instead of two panes.

b) Most bothersome, if within Nautilus we bookmark directories on
remote machines then every time we log in Gnome makes us type in
passwords at login time instead of when we access the remote machine.
Worse, if the machine which is bookmarked happens to be turned off
then we get longs delays and error messages. In all the whole Nautilus
solution seems to be quite unremarkable at this time.

then how is this a graphical file manager. It seems to be a shell. I
support it is a replacement for ssh/scp protocols but that's not the
problem just yet. I have no problems with scp and actually prefer it
as it works with the Mac's and Windows machines I have here.

   Again, thanks for your responses. I do appreciate them. I also
tried out xfe which seems OK on a single machine. I have not yet
figured out if it can see the network using scp.

That's not, what happens here. I'm only prompted for the password,
when I access the remote machine.

I disagree. It works quite fast and is easy to use, barring the
(as I assume) misconfiguration on your side.

It isn't. Nobody said, that it is. Everybody wrote, that it is
an URL scheme for Konqueror/Krusader (both KDE).

It isn't. It's an implementation for KDE, which allows it to use
SSH to transfer files. It doesn't use SCP or SFTP, as far as I
know.

No need for that; I believe thare are many graphical client that can do 
what you need (see below).

If you use gnome, chances are that you already have gftp installed.

gftp does that.

Use public key authentication and you will not be prompted for passwords 
(select "SSH2" in the gftp protocol drop down menu).

Of course, I used gftp as an example because that's the one I'm most 
familiar with, but there are surely many others out there that support 
the same features.

if you compile it with USE="X" for X11 support, and run it inside an
xterm with 'mc -x', it supports interfacing with the mouse (right
click to tag files, mouse scroll scrolls the pane, left click to
select/enter directories/execute files/view files). It doesn't support
drag-n-drop, but you can tag the files and then click on 'move' or
'copy'. 

It supports a lot of virtual filesystems: the local fs, ftpfs, tarfs,
undelfs (undeleting files on ext2), fish (ssh), mcfs, and optional
smb/cifs support. 

To connect to an external host, click either 'left' or 'right' on the
menu bar (corresponds to which pane you want to connect), and select
'Shell Link'.

It is definitely not! Fish is a kioslave for KDE [1]. It enables *all* KDE 
applications to access and browse through ssh as were the files local. "All 
KDE applications" include the file managers (konqueror and krusader). 

Personally I think krusader [2] is the best application for your purpose but 
it does pull in kdelibs from kde and you do need kdebase-kioslaves to access 
things through ssh or sftp with fish:// or sftp:// .

Both Nautilus and Konqueror support SSH. With Nautilus (Gnome),
you setup a remote server and set "SSH" as the remote server
type. With Konqueror (KDE), you use the "fish" protocol.

Setup FUSE and you should be able to 'mount' ssh using sys-fs/sshfs-fuse. Then 
use whatever file browser you'd like to manipulate files.

If you are using Gnome, the best option is just to use Nautilus, which
has this functionality built in.  Just click Places | Connect to
Server, and fill in your info.  This will create a normal nautilus
window that you can drag and drop from.

Incidentally you can do the same thing in nautilus :-)  Ctrl-L will
bring up a location dialog, and then you can use
sftp://use@host[/path] to open up the folder remotely.  The
disadvantage of doing this is that it doesn't save you a lot of time,
and if you use the 'Connect to Server' option then the remote folder
will show up under 'Places' in the future.

On another note, you can use sshfs and use any file browser you can
think of to access the files.

As a slight aside, does anyone know of any compatibility issues with using
sshfs to mount a partition from an OS X machine? I got some weird results but
didn't have time to research thoroughly. Could easily have been user error on
my part.
