I've just updated to KDE Plasma 5.17.4 & can't start KDE
because it can't find 'startkde', so I'm back with the elegance of Fluxbox.

Can anyone tell me where 'startkde' is now to be found
or what its replacement is ?

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me since I use the GUI and xdm
service.  I think this might make sense to you tho.

From the console

    To start Plasma with xinit/startx, append exec startplasma-x11 to
your .xinitrc file.

Does that help?

Thanks ! -- I'm now back in the questionable glories of KDE !

However, as someone else discovered, the L-click menu doesn't work now.
I didn't follow that thread in detail : did anyone solve the problem ?

I've also had another KDE desktop problem for a long time.
The clock on the panel claims it's showing EST (N America),
but in fact deducts another 5 hr , so 06:32 EST shows as 01:32 EST.
Has anyone else seen this ?

Check your "HW clock is on local or UTC time" settings ...

Either delete and logout/login again or figure out what line is
offending KDE so much.  This is the file:

plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

Which is located in /home/<your-user>/.config/ .  That is what fixed the
other persons problem.  Knowing what line does this would be nice.  You
lose pretty much all your settings it seems.

Since mine is working, here is my file with a few irrelevant parts
removed.  For future reference, anyone posting this who doesn't want to
have everyone knowing where you live etc, filter this file.  I found
city name, state, zip code and such in this thing.  O_O

I think the important bit is at the beginning of the file.  That seems
to be where mouse stuff is.

Hope this helps.

In the system as a whole, that's always been my setting.
The 'date' command give : 'Sat 28 Dec 2019 09:44:07 PM EST' correctly.

In KDE, System Settings -> Regional Settings -> Date+Time -> Time Zone
shows 'UTC' ; if I change it to 'Toronto', then 'Apply', there's no change :
the digital clock in the panel continues to show '16:44:07 EST' ;
anyway, the Time Zone display tells me I can't save the configuration.
When I look at the 'Date + Time' display itself,
the analog clock shows the correct time, as does the legend below.

In  ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc , it says :

  [Containments][16][Applets][21][Configuration][Appearance]
  dateFormat=isoDate
  lastSelectedTimezone=America/Toronto
  selectedTimeZones=America/Toronto
  showDate=true
  showSeconds=true
  use24hFormat=2

This is what I would expect to see.

Why can't I save the configuration above ? Perhaps that's the problem.

I just checked Fluxbox : its panel clock showed '22:06' correctly.

The top entry in the "time zone" config page is "local" "system time zone"
(or something like that, I don't run the desktop in English.)
What does it say there in the leftmost column?

To force the clock to "Toronto" you can simply uncheck the box for every
other than "Toronto".

Yes. This is under Digital Clock Settings.

> What does it say there in the leftmost column?

'UTC'. That line's box isn't checked ; 'Toronto' below is checked.

> To force the clock to "Toronto"
> you can simply uncheck the box for every other than "Toronto".

They are all unchecked.

Well anyway, I unchecked "Toronto" & was warned that >= 1 must be checked
& that it had automatically checked "Local : your system time zone",
after which the time showed was correct, ie now "5:26:38" (sb "05:26:38") ;
it doesn't say "EST" anymore, but that doesn't matter much.

The label 'UTC' under 'City' is very misleading.

Thanks for helping me solve a long-standing problem.
I'll add a note in my home-made help files.
