I'm up-to-date on stable ebuilds.
I've tried to view a cute youTube "Code Monkey" video, but get the complaint my
   flash Player plugin is obsolete (or I'm blocking Javascript, which
is false).  It's
   at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLRBiEBRAc
I've downloaded the latest player that Adobe offers for linux, but
still get that
   message.
about:plugins reports 3 separate versions of the plugin, and I have no idea
  how to clean that up, since the plugins directory contains only one.

Any clues out there?

Hi,

did you install it manually or did you emerge the latest version of
net-www/netscape-flash ?

This one works for me !

I'm trying to view a cute youTube video based on "Code Monkey":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLRBiEBRAc
I get a complaint that either I'm blocking Javascript (false) or else
    I have an old version of FlashPlayer (problematic).
I'm current with stable x86 ebuilds
I went to the indicated page and downloaded Adobe's latest for
   Linux.
On restart, Firefox reports two different Flash plugins installed
   (via about:plugins), both 7.0, but one's r25 and the other's r69.
   The actual /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins directory contains only one.
   I see them registered in ~/.mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat, but that
      file says don't edit it.
I still get the complaint that I have the wrong plugin.

Any clues?

Manually. My quick eix for FlashPlayer got nowhere, so I didn't realize
there was such a thing. I can undo my work and try the emerge. For now,
assume the problem is fixed.

Try emerging the netscape-flash in portage. It works for me.

Version 7 is too old for most youtube videos. They have moved on to
version 8 (or 9?), for which there is no released player. There is a
package.masked beta version, which you can merge if you unmask it:

echo "=net-www/netscape-flash-9.0.21.78" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
emerge -u netscape-flash

Note that the beta is 32-bit only, so if you are using an amd64 arch,
you will need to merge the 32-bit mozilla-firefox-bin, and symlink
libflashplayer.so manually:

cd /opt/firefox/plugins
ln -s /usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins/

You can then start the 32-bit firefox with /opt/firefox/firefox.

Here's some code for downloading youtube videos:
------------------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/perl

$base="http://videodownloader.net/get/?url=";

if ($#ARGV==-1) {
    print "Usage: u2b.pl \"[youtube-url-here]\"\n";
        exit(1);
        }
        $u2burl=$ARGV[0];

        print "Fetching downloading url...\n\n";
        $contents=`curl -s '$base/$u2burl'`;
        $contents=~s/\n//;
        $contents=~/<a href="http:\/\/youtube.com\/get_video\?(.*)">/;
        $contents=substr($1,0,55);
        print "Found: '$contents'\n\n";
        system("wget -c 'http://youtube.com/get_video?$contents'");
        print "\nAnd now...run mplayer!\n";
------------------------------------------------

PS: I don't have the author's name, so sorry if you find this without
any note about you :-)

Also, you could download "Ook? Video Ook!" Firefox's extension.

or, you could just install the firefox add-on "videodownloader" from
http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php and have a little icon in your
status bar which, on a right click, will let you download any mp3,
flash, wmv, avi, etc, etc, on the current web page.

I've downloaded the latest player that Adobe offers for linux,
/SNIP
Are you talking about the one that firefox directs you to based on the
EMBED tag for the player or the actual latest linux version?
Specificly: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html

I have yet to find any flash that whines about my version or anything
like it since installing that. No problems either.
