As it turned out, I needed to emerge xf86-input-keyboard---at which
point keyboard function was recovered, but mouse function was dead.
Then I emerged xf86-input-mouse.
The second thing I had to do was comment two lines in my xorg.conf:
dri and xtrap.
That was pretty easy.
