I actually ran an xorg setup program (xorgconfig) that helped get a credible  first off xorg.conf going, this time.  Unmerged nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, and finally as often seems to happen, just when I was about to give it up, I walked back in the room and the gdm screen was staring me in the face!

So thanks, I will study your settings.  I will have to work out TV out= , and reinstall nvidia drivers again, soon.

I did not use the Xo= rg -configure, but these are the first things that I
check to make sure = that there is the following lines within
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

For the nvidia drivers
Section "= Device"
        Identifier&= nbsp; "nvidiaCard"
      &n= bsp; Driver      "nvidia"
E= ndSection

And there should be a link within the screen section to yo= ur (mine) nvidiaCard
Section "Screen"
       = ; Identifier "Screen0"
     &nbs= p;  Device     "nvidiaCard"
....= .

This is my section for the Module, for the nvidia cards you need t= o unselect
the dri module and include the glx.

Section "Module"
      &= nbsp; Load "freetype"
      = ;  Load  "extmod"
    =     Load  "glx"
  &nbs= p;     #Load  "dri"
 &= nbsp;      Load  "dbe"        Load  "reco= rd"
        Load  "x= trap"
        Load &nb= sp;"type1"
EndSection

If you have these options created= then make sure there is the
/etc/modules.d/nvidia
file, mine has
=
# Nvidia drivers support
alias char-major-195 nvidia
alias /dev/nvidiactl char-major-195
<= br>within it (if you have to add it do an modules-update)
