 *
 * It is important to note that OpenOffice.org is a very fragile
 * build when it comes to CFLAGS. A number of flags have already
 * been filtered out. If you experience difficulty merging this
 * package and use agressive CFLAGS, lower the CFLAGS and try to
 * merge again. Also note that building OOo takes a lot of time and
 * hardware ressources: 4-6 GB free diskspace and 256 MB RAM are
 * the minimum requirements. If you have less, use openoffice-bin
 *  instead.
 *
 * Also if you experience a build break, please make sure to retry
 *  with MAKEOPTS=-j1 before filing a bug.
 *
 *
 * To get a localized build, set the according LINGUAS variable(s).
 *
 * You are building with java-support disabled, this results in some
 * of the OpenOffice.org functionality being disabled.
 * If something you need does not work for you, rebuild with
 *  java in your USE-flags.
 *
 *
 * ERROR: app-office/openoffice-3.0.0 failed.
 * Call stack:
 *               ebuild.sh, line   49:  Called src_compile
 * environment, line 5415: Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 * make || die "Build failed"
 *  The die message:
 *   Build failed
 *
 * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if
 * relevant.
 * A complete build log is located at
 * '/var/tmp/portage/app-office/openoffice-3.0.0/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at
 * '/var/tmp/portage/app-office/openoffice-3.0.0/temp/environment'.
 *
 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.

Anyone see this before?

Thanks,
Mike

That still doesn't show where the error occured, try to dig out the
actual error in build.log, or attach it.

Here's another one: using a binary package that most likely doesn't fit into
your otherwise self-compiled system is even more idiotic.

Bye...

Saying compiling OO is idiotic is a bit harsh and a generalization,
but there are merit to the underlying idea.

First off, as far as I can remember, compiling OO from source and
installing the binary version is not exactly the same. The source one
install OO from go-oo.org while the binary package is the normal Sun
OO.

Another reason is that OO is reputed for having a very complicated
build system that takes up a lot of resources to complete. Depending
on the hardware you are doing this on "using a binary package that
most likely doesn't fit into your otherwise self-compiled system" may
not be that idiotic.

Regards
Dirk

If my hardware is not compilation friendly, I'd use a binary distribution and
end up with an OOo that fits into the system (given that the maintainers of
the chosen distribution also compiled the package from sources).

Bye...

Then maybe the gentoo docs should instruct that.

Mind you, I thought that compiling from source was the only point to using
Gentoo. I'm getting quite a mixed message here.

Don't feed trolls, esp when they don't give a real name in their messages.

I compiled OO 3.0.0 without any problem, but I do include Java.
You should take the advice you got at first & search out the real error,
also check the Gentoo Forum & Bugzilla because others may have hit this too.
Otherwise, try compiling with Java (and any extra pkgs that requires).

Hello everyone,

I guess you all missunderestimated the alert about Random Access Memory.
I had the same problem, I could not compile openoffice.
I just had the same warning message and the merge stopped.
I only had 512 of RAM from which 128 are used by my graphic card,
and with the system running it wasn't enough RAM room for Ooo to
compile (at least 256 MB ?!).

ANyway I bought myself a 1GB RAM card and that's it,
I could emerge openoffice and, yesterday, I have successfully compiled
it in like 4 hours hehe !

SO please check how much available memory you have

Be Pleasant, nothing is idiotic, it's just a matter of choice ;-)
Red.

I have 1Gig in this system, and I'm planning to add more.

I've had issues in the past with Gentoo on small memory systems, but if that's
the problem here, it's the first time it's happened since install.

So you should add this part of it to the bug you've already created:

I agree, if you are going to use a OS that is source based, you need to
be source based. It may take 6 or 7 hours to compile OOo on my rig but
everything on my system is compiled as far as I know.

Also, isn't whether a person uses a binary or not up the the person in
the chair? Why is it that every time someone comes here to get help
with OOo that a comment is made to install the binary? That is not
exactly a fix for the problem. I have read about problems with the
binary version too and the compiled version will work fine. Let the
person that owns the puter make up their own mind. It's not our place
to tell them what packages to install unless they ask.

This only applies to OOo 2.x ebuilds... there is no Go-oo of 3.x and I
don't think Gentoo uses it from what I could tell.

ha ha ! :)

Ok thanks for the GWB citations
there is one I love too :

"I beleive that fish and human being can coexist !"
GWB
At Some Conference where he had random access.

Ok by the way the RAM doesn't seem to be a problem
since Micheal(?) has 1GB and I hope 256 MB were at least free during the
compilation time.

Good luck.

I am misunderestimating g_dgettext function !!!
I've got lots of broken packages missing reference to that function.
oh well..

So, I killed firefox to free up memory and let it build overnight. The build
completed successfully. Perhaps it was a memory issue.

I'm starting to think that ebuilds need available memory requirements. Don't
build this without 1Gig of free memory, etc...

Anywho, it works now.

You're absolutely right. When I emerged Ooo 3.x, I did not notice it
pull anything but maybe it was just background downloaded. On
Go-oo.org, the source code download link is for 2.x series. Apparently
they have 3.x and just aren't publicizing it. I have been shamed. :P

Both RAM and disk space are non-issues on my system[1] and last
night's ooo rebuild still managed to fail (too far away from my logs
to see that error easily, but pretty sure it was module 'sw' rather
than 'chart2'). I restarted it this morning, but didn't get to stay
and watch... and I'll be out of town all weekend. Maybe next week I'll
have time to see if it's willing to cooperate... same general error
message as OP, but different place in the build.

[1] 4GB ram, less than 1gb used when I'm not compiling, and I was
building ooo with portage temp pointed toward my half-empty 500GB
drive (since it wasn't going to fit in tmpfs like nearly everything
else does).

There is this in the Openoffice ebuild
# Check if we have enough RAM and free diskspace to build this beast
	CHECKREQS_MEMORY="512"
	use debug && CHECKREQS_DISK_BUILD="8192" || CHECKREQS_DISK_BUILD="5120"
	check_reqs

I have one observation and one doubt
Observation: more packages should have warnings against this. GCC 4.3
needs more than 1.5GiB of disk space to build, at least with the USE
flags fortran gcj gtk mudflap openmp.

Doubt: don't you have enough swap? Does Openoffice need so much memory
that even with swap it failed?
