Dear list members,
  I am struggling with ati-drivers for ATI X800 card. I have followed 
every HOWTO I could find through google but still no luck. The video 
card I have is ATI X800 GTO. Here goes relevant lspci output:

The problem I'm having is no opengl - fglrxinfo output:

and problem with switching (or in fact logging out from X) to text 
console.. basically my computer hangs and turns off my monitor (Note. It 
HANGS. There are some reports that says that simply monitor is blank - 
this is not the case).

I've got AMD64 box but I do not know whether this is amd64 specific 
problem so I am posting to general user group.

If anybody is able to help me I would be grateful.

Is the fglrx kernel module loaded?  If so, does /dev/dri/card0 exist?

Remember that you must remerge ati-drivers each time you build a
kernel...and that /usr/src/linux needs to be a symlink to the
configured sources of your _currently_ running kernel if want to build
a module for that.

Are you using the radeon framebuffer driver (CONFIG_FB_RADEON) in the
kernel?  If so, that is probably the issue.  Try removing that, and
using just the standard vga/vesa framebuffer driver or even just a

Thanks for reply. If I use any FB then I cannot start X - same issue it 
hangs and turns off my monitor. If I turn off FB (and I was using vesa 
btw) and use text console then I can start x but cannot logout.

Ok, the other thing you might try is a more recent version of the
drivers.  You can get the ~arch version with "echo
x11-drivers/ati-drivers >>/etc/portage/package.keywords".  Updating
ati-drivers then should give you version 8.30.3 (and in a few days,
8.31.5).

But other than that, I don't really know.

Hi,
  Actually I cannot find R480 chipset there, nor X800 GTO, so either I'm 
missing something or nobody added this card to the list.

Anyway as for XGL - now, when I have OpenGL I am trying to run XGL and 
Beryl. However this is mundane work as I have to reset my box after each 
configuration change because my box hangs upon exiting to text console. :(

That didn't do a trick. During logout I still have system hang. There 
are however side effects. Now I see in XOrg logs:

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so failed (/usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

the library is not there but it is under: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/dri . When I do the symlink where xorg searches for it then I got "unresolved symbol" errors:

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so failed (/usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_add_entrypoint)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

Anyway, I believe this is not related to my problem.

Looks like the same card to me..... Chips numbers may be different,
so it's hard to tell if there is/isnot an exact match. Often chips
numers just indicate trivial differences like the amount of
internal cache, MHz speeds of busses/processes etc etc.

I did not see it in the section where video cards that are know to
not work.....
