For the radeon 9200 you do not need ati-drivers. Use the opensource
"radeon" driver from x.org by setting VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa" in
/etc/make.conf and running "emerge -Dv xorg-server". You will also
need to change the device driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf from "fglrx" to
"radeon".

I ran into the same problem (x86, more or less fully stable) after
switching to the 2.6.18-gentoo-r2 kernel when it had become stable. In
fact, any lastest stable ati-drivers usually haven't worked together
with the according lastest stable gentoo-sources for me...
Anyway: I suggest moving to ati-drivers-8.29.6 (masked) - this one
compiles and runs flawlessly as far as I can say. I.e. put the
following line into your /etc/portage/package.keywords:
=x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.29.6 ~x86
Maybe some later unstable version would compile as well.
