hi, i recently upgraded xorg-x11 to 7.0-r1. after the upgrade everything
works fine, except one thing.
1600x1200 resolution stopped working (it worked fine in 6.8).
i've got an onboard intel video card, based on 915G chipset.
the only part of Xorg.0.log that seems relevant is:
(II) I810(0): miro: Using default hsync range of 30.00-86.00 kHz
(II) I810(0): miro: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
(II) I810(0): Not using built-in mode "1920x1440" (width too large for
virtual size)
(1600x1200,miro) mode clock 162MHz exceeds DDC maximum 150MHz
(II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode (1600
-> 2048).
(--) I810(0): Virtual size is 1600x1200 (pitch 2048)
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1280x1024"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "1024x768"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "800x600"
(**) I810(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"
i get more of the "mode clock exceeds DDC maximum" messages.
i could send a full Xorg.log and xorg.conf if needed.
thank you for any help
regards

You might have some luck using this:
* sys-apps/855resolution [ Masked ]
Latest version available: 0.4
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 6 kB
Homepage: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/apoirier
Description: Utility to patch VBIOS of Intel 855 / 865 / 915
chipsets.
License: public-domain as-is
I think there is also a 915 resolution at
www.geocities.com/stomljen/download.html
Unfortunately they didnt help me as I have a laptop with a built in LCD
of 768 pixels (v), and try as I might I cant overide it even when I am
using it on an external monitor/projector with a much higher, but still
valid resolution for the chipset :( Windows seems to be able to do
it ... but not modular X. (I did it using the old xfree on a different
laptop - so I think it might be an modular xorg driver limitation)

Yes please. At the very least, the Monitor, Screen, and Device
sections of your xorg.conf.

thanks for help, but unfortunately those are not of much use to me,
because 1600x1200 mode IS present in the bios. it just won't run :(

Something isn't right here. Why does X think your config file has the
(default) 28-33khz and 43-72Hz ranges?
Can you post your ServerLayout section?

of course. here it is:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "XFree86 Configured"
Screen "Screen0"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
everything seems to be fine to me... (unless i'm not aware of something)
(also i didn't notice this 28-33kHz/43-72Hz problem before...)

Also, see if you have an xorg.conf in /root/ or anywhere other than /etc/X11.

locations are as follows:

This means, that another xorg.conf might be used, instead of the one
in /etc/X11.
If you have only one xorg.conf, and it is in /etc/X11, see if you are using
the correct monitor in your Screen section.

I had a similar problem. I run dual 21" monitors both at home and the
office (I physically move
the system unit but not the monitors). The office monitors (Nokia
445XiPlus) would not accept
the 1600x1200 resolution. I noticed in their spec that they also support
1600x1280. So added
1600x1280 to the Device section, MetaModes option. And they worked. So
at home I now
have 3200x1200, and the office runs at 3200x1280 automatically.

Roy

This actually did help.
I was not aware that such option exists. i tried Option "NoDDC" "true"
and that just messed everything up (and i could use 640x480 only).
Option "DDC" "Off" actually works, so thanks a lot for help. I'm aware
this is not a real solution just to ignore what DDC says, but it works
and it's what's the most important ;)

no, that's not the case, as changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf actually did
have influence on behaviour of xorg. thanks for the idea, though. i was
not aware of this.
However the problem is temporarily with Option "DDC" "Off" as was
suggested in a different post.
