I lied. The problem is at the top:
configure:1715: checking build system type
configure:1733: result: i686-pc-linux-gnu
configure:1741: checking host system type
configure:1755: result: i686-pc-linux-gnu
For some reason your system wants to build for i686, not x86_64.
What does /etc/make.conf contain?
How about "env | grep i686"
