According to /etc/conf.d/net.example, this should how be:

routes_eth0=( "default via 222.20.45.254" )

> Start eth0
>  Bringing up eth0
>  222.20.45.71

Ok, so do you now see this address when you do ifconfig?  Before you
were getting something completely different.
