Yes, boneheaded indeed. Misspelt my search terms. Bloody hell. The
solution was, as usual, in the forums. Seems that ati doesn't play
nicely with the 2.6.12 kernel, so I downgraded to 2.6.11-gentoo-r8
and, voila!
