I'm running postfix and tpop3d on my site for email delivery.
Everything is working great; internally I can send & receive, and externally
I can send and receive also (using smtp auth for sending, & tpop3d for
receiving).
However, I'd like to add the ability to check my email through my web server
(although it's not running now, that's hardly the point ;-)
I'm looking for suggestions for a good package to plug into the web server
to provide this functionality.
Anybody out there able to point me to an existing open-source, solid
package?
Thanks!
Dave

I've had no problems with squirrelmail so far: www.squirrelmail.com

Most webmail packages require IMAP, not POP3. When I set up webmail, I
had to switch from teapop to dovecot first. Dovecot does POP3 and IMAP,
so everyone was happy.

Actually, Horde is the framework, IMP is the Mail Program :)
Anyway, Horde is a good enterprise-scale system, and once setup can work
well, esp. with the range of other plug-in modules that go with Horde
(Contact Management, Time Management, Calender, etc.). But, there are
must easier systems to setup and use. Squirrelmail being one of them.
Unless you want something and big and as powerful (and as resource
hungry - I run it on a PII-450 with 128Mb RAM and it's not that
responsive) as Horde, I'd recommend something else.

Horde caveats:
1. must have +nls in mod_php
2. must be using a mod_php of no later than 4.3.11
3. moronic default settings for folder names and imap namespace.
4. v2 vs. v3.
You have to decide between horde framework v2 and horde framework v3.
v2 just works, but isn't as fancy. v3 does all kinds of stuff and... if
you can spend the time to figure out how to turn it on. All v3 stuff is
~x86 at the moment. Gentoo does make things a bit easier with slotting
and webapps-config.
5. Everything is a separate package
No really. If you've installed less than 4 packages you're probably
missing features you expected to have.
6. There is NO documentation.
As always there are number of decent posts in the Gentoo forums which
helped me muddle through most things. The qmail virt how-to also
explains some basic setup as well.
7. db is required
I'm actually not sure about this one. It appears that a db is needed to
do filtering. Since this is not working yet, I can't say for sure.
Can you guess which webmail package I've been attempting to subjugate
for the past couple of hours?

Can't confirm that. I am running both Horde 2 and 3 with 4.4.0-r3.

I have run it with 4.4.0 here, although now running with 4.3.11 as Zend
Debugger doesn't like the 4.4.x series atm.

Anyone out there using eGroupWare? Looks good on the site and it would
appear to use most of the standard tools...

Are you using the CVS versions of horde? I get all sort of errors on the
front page as soone as I switch to php 4.4 and the Gentoo packages.
There are a few threads in the forums that mention issues with 4.4.0 as
well.
http://archives.free.net.ph/message/20050712.145515.4bf53644.en.html
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-378684.html
And for the hell of it how does one get filtering to work in
horde2/imp3? Strangely I can pull up the filter interface if I type the
URL in manually, but can't make IMP put a link to it anywhere.

I've got it installed. I like the looks of it a lot, but my mail users are
real os users, and you have to add the egroupware users into it's database.
so i'd have to add everyone twice, and password changes would be a nightmare.
so I pretty much don't use it. I like the product, though, if I had virtural
users.

Cool. This is going on my home system so, whilst I would have double user
headaches, since I'm only talking about 5 users it shouldn't be a problem.
