I think you can use ~ for your home directory.

Thus, if your login name is ill,
~/Desktop/output.pdf

I do that with Firefox and Seamonkey, since I have many subdirectories for different purposes.

I never or hardly ever use ~/Desktop .

I think this works generally in Linux and BSD.
