Hi,
My wife picked up a new printer on the cheap. It's an Epson and
pretty much identical to one on my son's old Fedora system so I am
sure it should work. However so far I cannot get CUPS to make it
print.

1) I've plugged it in to a USB port. It's visible using usbview.

2) I tried configuring it as a new printer within CUPS. I called it a
USB printer and chose USB Printer #1.

3) I picked out the Epson Stylus stuff and CUPS said everythign was cool.

4) When I look at printer status I see that the printer is there. It
says the printer is ready to print and its address usb:/dev/usb/lp0.
However when I unplug the USB cable and refresh the browser it doesn't
show as being not ready.

I tried printing a test page. The print job happens and the system
says it's completed but no test page comes out.

What obvious thing am I missing about this?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Norberto,
The printer is an Epson Stylus C62. The driver we tried to use was
the Epson driver within CUPS. (Where you say what printer type and can
choose Epson, HP and 2-3 others.) It did not allow us to choose the
specific printer model.

Try C42UX (ijs) IIRC it's in the gimp-print package, but I'm not sure.

Hey guys. Just my two cents - I'm having trouble configuring the Epson
C86, which is odd, because I've used this printer with Gentoo/CUPS
before, and never had any problems. It's odd that gimp-print is
installed, and I don't see the drivers popping up in the web interface.

I'll keep you posted!

Back to the drawing board!

Have you built things with the ppds USE flag, and do you have the various
foomatic-* packages installed?

Hi Jeff,
We ended up leaving the printer on the older FC2 box so that we
didn't have to deal with this. Mostly it works pretty well that way
for us.

Cheers,
Mark

Ok, after skimming through Gentoo docs, and reading people's comments on
this thread, I've once again tracked down the culprit.

All I did, so that CUPS would show me all the available drivers in the
web interface, is add the following flags to my make.conf:

cups ppds

cups - Add support for CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)

ppds - Adds support for automatically generated ppd (printing driver) files

Re-emerged cups and gimp-print, and now everything works great!

Thanks to all for your help.

P.S. I also added gimp-print ~x86 to my /etc/portage/package.keywords file.
