Hi,
Is Flash supposed to be fully supported on the AMD64 platform? I
don't know where to find out info like this.

It seems I have Flash installed but on some sites Firefox tells me
that it finds no suitable plugin, such as the top part of this site:

http://www.digidesign.com/

When I go through the guided format to get a plugin it eventually
leads me to Macromedia's site, but I do have netscape-flash installed:

lightning ~ # emerge -pv netscape-flash

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] net-www/netscape-flash-7.0.25 +gtk 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
lightning ~ #

lightning ~ # uname -a
Linux lightning 2.6.13-gentoo #2 Sat Sep 3 16:45:26 PDT 2005 x86_64
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
lightning ~ #

As a second question Neil and someone else said the other day that
certain multimedia things didn't work on AMD64. Where could I find out
what is and is not supported?

Thanks,
Mark

Sorry - I just discovered the gentoo-amd64-users list. Probably much
better to ask these questions there.

Thanks,
Mark

I'll answer your question anyway - you need a 32bit Firefox to run the 32bit
flash plugin.

emerge -vp mozilla-firefox-bin

Thanks. I've been trying to read up on this stuff. Does this mean I
have to run this in a 32-bit environment, or install 32-bit emupdation
libraries? Basically I'm on this page:

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/technotes/index.xml?part=1&chap=4

and wondering how much of this I have to do?

I have no problem running a 32-bit browser if that's what's required for now.

Thanks,
Mark

actually, IIRC if you try and emerge firefox-bin it will grab all of
the emulation libraries you require, not 100% sure tho because it's
been a while since I did it...

GAAARRRR...I need to read over my emails before sending them, I can't
make them sound the way I want, I'm really sorry.

What I meant was:
all you need to emerge is firefox-bin, but im not 100% sure whether
emulation libraries are needed too (if they are, then emerging
firefox-bin will set them up properly, no extra work for you)...

Oh and btw I'm both Perral1 and Taylor Morrow of course...Just
different places I'm sending it from.

Sorry for the screw-ups...

No, don't worry about two messages. Not a problem for me. (Cannot
speak for others...) ;-)

OK, it seems that something else has already pulled them in:

lightning ~ # emerge -pv emul-linux-x86-baselibs emul-linux-x86-xlibs
emul-linux-x86-gtklibs emul-linux-x86-qtlibs

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs-2.1.2 0 kB
[ebuild R ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs-2.1 +opengl 0 kB
[ebuild R ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-gtklibs-2.1 0 kB
[ebuild N ] app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs-2.1.1 6,969 kB

Total size of downloads: 6,969 kB
lightning ~ #

I guess the qt lib isn't required yet.

I'll give this a try tomorrow and see how it goes.

This does lead me to ask something I've been curious about. How can I
categorically show that I'm running 64-bit code??? My kernel wants to
convince me through its name:

lightning ~ # uname -a
Linux lightning 2.6.13-gentoo #2 Sat Sep 3 16:45:26 PDT 2005 x86_64
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
lightning ~ #

But beyond that how would someone show that they are really moving
around 64-bits instead of 32?

Thanks,
Mark

to tell you the truth I dunno...

I've always just trusted Linus & Gentoo :P

The only way I've ever seen it shown is in all of the about boxes, but
otherwise I dunno...

Cool. Thanks. Someone will know how to tell.

I did get Flash working finally using firefox-bin instead of firefox.
That's cool too. I don't care if I'm running 32-bit when I browse.
Just want 64-bit when using Ardour.

Cheers,
Mark
