It is usually not necessary unless you change your kernel or bootloader. As for shutdowns there are several arguments for and against. What often kills electronic is the shock between hot and cold so there is an argument about keeping the system on. Whether it is always safe to keep the computer on all the time remains to be proven. My son always leaves his computer on and I had to recently replace it, the mother board was gone. Mine which was purchased around the same time has had no issues, I shutdown every night unless I need to do some updates. An argument against it would be wasting energy. Computers are cheap, so are hard disk.
