Which is why you should ALWAYS have a backup of /etc. Just incase. I have a
con job that tars up /etc and puts it in root's home every few days and it
has saved my butt quite a few times.

And as somebody else said let this be a good (albeit tough) lesson that you
should never run updates on a production server that you haven't tested on
at least a development box.
