Hi all,
Running an unstable 64 bit KDE desktop. Sometimes when it comes time to
shut down, I go to the "K" thingy on the menu bar, select "Leave" ->
"Shut down" and then hit the button on the dialogue that pops up, and in
turn the machine shuts down.

Other times, after selecting "Shut down", no dialogue comes up. Even if
I wait 30 seconds, the default shutdown wait period, the machine does
not shut down. In this case, I now have to resort to firing up a
terminal then as root running "shutdown -h now". This will in turn cause
the shutdown.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why sometimes the dialogue, and hence
the shutdown process, does work and others it does not? Any thoughts are
greatly appreciated.

	Andrew

I've seen similar oddities from time to time myself, and I worked around
them:

I added the Lock/Logout plasmoid to my panel. That one doesn't go away
on a whim.

I've seen this. sometimes, if I wait long enough, I get a message about a
process that can't be interrupted. Other times, I probably just don't
wait long enough.

Patience is a virtue, but not one of mine.

I had a power outage earlier and had to shutdown. I noticed that when I
right click on the desktop to get the menu to pop up, it finally popped
up, after some waiting. I did some KDE updates last night and that was
the first time I recall it doing it on my rig. Thing is, I have a 4
core 3.2GHz CPU so speed shouldn't be a issue when little else is running.

It is odd but based on other replies, I suspect a bug, maybe one old one
and one newer one since I just had the problem today after updating last
night. ;-)

At least you are not alone.

Dale
