What are your kernel version ? (uname -a)
What are your kernel package ? (gentoo-sources ???)
So perhaps a bug with a kernel you install recently
I have so hardware, that bug awfully with certain version of kernel, and do hang up after a mount ...
so perhaps search in this way

Well udev can load modules, but if that causes the system to hang, it
is almost certainly a bug in that module.
Marco, if you suspect this at all, you can set RC_COLDPLUG=no in
/etc/conf.d/rc to completely disable module loading by udev.
