Hi,

I'm using Gentoo, and I'm thinking of buying this printer:
http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370533563484

The printer specification says that it can emulate Epson ESC/P and IBM
Proprinter command sets.

I saw CUPS documentation and it is written that printers supporting
Epson ESC/P command set are supported on Linux.
http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/sam.html#EPSON9

I'd like to know if anybody is using this printer here on this list or,
does it require some hardware switch changes, etc (like jumper settings)
to make the printer comply to particular command set? I'm buying a dot
matrix printer for the first time, please help. It's urgent.

I doubt if there's many people on this list using dot-matrix printers, let alone anyone using that particular model.

If it emulates that Epson I doubt if you'll have too many problems (for plain text, dollar signs, spaces and line-feeds, at least; I don't warranty this advice if you need to do graphics or fancy little glyphs or wingdings).

You're right that you might have to change some jumpers, but they shouldn't be hard to find or access. Ask the seller - it'll probably be documented in the manual.

Just want to inform that dot-matrix printers are still alive and well;
my office has 3 heavy duty dot-matrix printers for printing carbonized
tax receipts for our clients. And another medium duty one for printing
our carbonized salary slips ;)

Alas, the program used to print the tax receipts and salary slips are
custom windoze apps, so I can't be sure how they will work with Linux
boxen.

Rgds,

I'm quite well aware that dot-matrix printers are still "alive and well" - that would seem evident from the fact that you can buy one new on eBay.

Saying that they're still is use, however, is a different matter from saying that they're in the kind of common, widespread, household use that they were 20+ years ago.

I had no doubt there would be *some* users of dot-matrix printers on this list, but they're not the solution most of is are reaching for when we want to print out our driving directions or tickets we reserved.

I look forward to your further illuminating comments on the actual question originally asked by Nilesh.

Don't know. Don't have one.

However, the manufacturer appears to still be in business, and that
looks like it's a current product. Perhaps you could ask them? Their
website isn't in the greatest of shape, but they do list a telephone
number.

Whoa, I didn't find that, even after many searches on Google. Anyways
thanks for that.
I've already sent a mail to the eBay dealer about this, now I'll mail
the OEM as well. Today here being a Sunday, nobody would be attending
the calls and tomorrow is a public holiday as well.

It strained my Google-fu via two different search engines. Yeah, it's
not exactly a prominent site. (One thing you may want to consider,
here...how long will that OEM be around to provide replacement parts?
I'm going to venture a guess it's a relatively new company.)

Good luck!

It's a quite old & reputed company. The problem with most firms here in
India is, they don't focus much on their websites which leads to a bad
impression to online users.
