A couple of days ago I applied via etc-update a new init script and conf
file for dovecot. Now I cannot get local LAN mail from it. I was
previously able to. My current dovecot version info is:
carter ~ # emerge -pv dovecot
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] net-mail/dovecot-2.0.11 USE="berkdb bzip2 doc ipv6 ldap
maildir mysql pam ssl zlib -caps -cydir -kerberos -managesieve -mbox
-mdbox -postgres -sdbox -sieve -sqlite -suid -vpopmail" 0 kB
Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB
* IMPORTANT: 3 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.
The /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf file is as such:
carter ~ # cat /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
## Dovecot configuration file
# If you're in a hurry, see http://wiki.dovecot.org/QuickConfiguration
# "doveconf -n" command gives a clean output of the changed settings. Use it
# instead of copy&pasting files when posting to the Dovecot mailing list.
# '#' character and everything after it is treated as comments. Extra spaces
# and tabs are ignored. If you want to use either of these explicitly,
put the
# value inside quotes, eg.: key = "# char and trailing whitespace "
# Default values are shown for each setting, it's not required to uncomment
# those. These are exceptions to this though: No sections (e.g.
namespace {})
# or plugin settings are added by default, they're listed only as examples.
# Paths are also just examples with the real defaults being based on
configure
# options. The paths listed here are for configure --prefix=/usr
# --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var

## Dictionary server settings
##
# Dictionary can be used to store key=value lists. This is used by several
# plugins. The dictionary can be accessed either directly or though a
# dictionary server. The following dict block maps dictionary names to URIs
# when the server is used. These can then be referenced using URIs in format
# "proxy::<name>".
dict {
#quota = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf.ext
#expire = sqlite:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf.ext
}
# Most of the actual configuration gets included below. The filenames are
# first sorted by their ASCII value and parsed in that order. The
00-prefixes
# in filenames are intended to make it easier to understand the ordering.
!include conf.d/*.conf
# A config file can also tried to be included without giving an error if
# it's not found:
!include_try /etc/dovecot/local.conf
The dovecot server is on 192.168.2.2, and I am trying to connect from
192.168.2.3. Please help!

What's the exact problem you're having? No response? Error response
from dovecot?
Do you see dovecot listening?
Do a 'netstat -a -t | egrep imap' and see if there's any output.
If it's not listening on *:imap (say on 127.0.0.1:imap for example)
then you probably want the 'listen = *' in your config file.
Is dovecot complaining in the logs?
When you emerge a new dovecot you need to restart it
(/etc/init.d/dovecot restart) or else you'll get errors with the
client/server communication as well.

I do not know which dovecot version you had before,
but 2.0.11 is the first 2.x in portage, so I suppose
it was 1.x
I remember updating from 1.x to 2.x was not so easy.
etc-update did not help me, configurtion changed a lot.
I had to edit a few new files in /etc/dovecot/conf.d,
some concerning authentication (10-auth.conf, auth-*)...

I can't even figure out what port dovecot is running on. I would assume
143 for IMAP, but telnetting to 192.168.2.2 dovecot does not greet me.
I can access the mail from the dovecot server from mutt in my terminal
window ssh'd over to that machine, but I need to be able to access it
from thunderbird, which can't even find the machine....

I was able to reload an old dovecot.conf from backups and convert it to
the new dovecot format using the command I found at
http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/2.0
It seems to be working now...
