this is expected behavior. It is like hotel california. You can never leave.
You could try this:
Read http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/lists.xml
find exampel for subscibing gentoo-user+subscribe@lists.gentoo.org
Change the emailadress you need to write to acordingly
gentoo-user+unsubscribe@lists.gentoo.org
See "+" not "-"
