Also, do you have pcie bus support enabled? I assume your card is not an AGP card... Did you get any warnings about kernel configuration when you compiled the ati-drivers? Check your emerge logs... Btw, I'm running 32-bit here so there may be some differences (like module paths as others have mentioned). Attaching my xorg.log in the hopes that you may find something useful out of it.
