[gentoo-user] kdm & french keyboard

I log in thru kdm. As I'm french, I have an azerty keyboard. By default, kdm use
a qwerty keymap. That's a problem when it comes to entering passwords. How do I
get kdm launched with an azerty keymap ? (nothing relevant found in kdmrc).

Set in in xorg.conf. there's a thread on the forums that deals with this
using HAL fdi files, but those are not deprecated for Xorg.

Until your version of Xorg stops supporting HAL, when you will need an
xorg.conf.

How? I know how to use udev for device recognition, but how do you tell

That will be greeted! Anyway I keep a copy of my old xorg.conf, easier to
configure and tweek that the HAL mess.

If you use a recent version of xorg-server (>= 1.8) you can enable the
"udev" use flag, and disable the flag "hal".

Hal usage with xorg is clearly deprecated now, and its complete
removal from xorg-server is scheduled soon, as it will be eventually
replaced by the new abstraction layer from freedesktop.org "DeviceKit"

Before it occurs, Xorg-server works well  using udev instead of hal to
deal with hardware recognition.

I've got a similar config (azerty keyboard, no xorg.conf) and just
created the file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-keymap.conf' where I put the
following lines:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "Keyboard"
        Driver "evdev"
        Option "xkbLayout"  "fr"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"

Interesting, but it seems more complex that a simple stanza
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. Using udev rules for something that will only be
used by one application adds unnecessary complication, IMO. If only X
will use the information, I'd prefer to put in in the X configuration
directory.

I agree with you, but I like to make things in order with the rules (without 
relation to udev).

But I don't like udev, its syntax is really hard to understand for user !

Oh crap.  You mean udev uses xml config files too?  Well, at least udev 
hasn't broke my keyboard and mouse.  lol   I don't have to much trouble 
with udev.  Heck, the one time I did, I deleted all the config files and 
re-emerged the thing.  Worked great then.  I think one got messed up 
somehow.

I'm glad deleting the config files and re-emerging worked for me then.  
It would certainly not work if I had to edit all that mess.  Reminds me 
of chickens.  You know, chicken scratch.  lol

I use hal to make my usb key allways mount on the same mountpoint.

It's a joke, and it's been going on for a *very* long time :-)

Every time someone mentions hal, and it doesn't matter what it's about, either 
me or Neil will usually post and and tell Dale now is his chance to tell us 
about hal. We've done this about 100 times by now so nothing Dale says
is new :-) And everyone else usually joins in the fun.

Sometimes, just for fun, we'll turn the hal joke into something against perl, 
or python or anything else really.

If you don't get the joke, you can ignore everything that happened after the 
first person mentioned "Dale"

Yea, everybody likes to pick on me.  LOL

People seem to forget tho that I have told people to try to use hal, 
even with xorg.  Sometimes it just works.  When it doesn't, remove the 
hal USE flag for xorg and life goes on.

I also think sometimes the joke is on everyone else.  Even the guy that 
wrote hal has given up on that monster.  That says a LOT to me.

I don't dislike anybody tho.  Hal does work for quite a few people.  It 
just doesn't work for some and can produce some horrible results when it 
doesn't work.  For those that can't get it to work, like me, disable it 
and move on.  Since it is dying anyway, no need putting in a lot of 
effort just to switch again later on.
