Hi,
There's a vBulletin forum I frequent:
http://forum.thinkbike.co.za
and my usual browser is Konqueror (just because kparts makes it so
convenient). Every so often, with no pattern I can find, this site hangs
Konqueror - cpu goes to 100% and the browser stays unresponsive.
I've tried various tricks to see what is going on when it does this, including
strace, to no avail. I have a hunch this started when I installed konq-
plugins, I have these enabled:
Adblock
bookmarklets
Crashes Monitor
KTHML settings
Konqueror feed icon
Search bar
translate
User Agent Changer
Web Archiver
My next step is to start the laborious process of disabling them one by one to
see if it makes a difference. Meanwhile, does anyone have suggestions for
clever trouble-shooting techniques to apply here?
I doubt anyone will have a solution to hand, just some pointers to likely
things to check is all I'm after at this stage.

without looking at that site - is there any flash stuff? What about javascript?
nspluginviewer is still a bitch - and buggy js can cause a tremendous amount
of cpu load.

Not knowing the site either, my weather radar site locks up when loading
the radar. It does this on Seamonkey, Firefox and a couple others BUT
Konqueror doesn't lock up at all. It doesn't animate any more tho but
it used to work fine. I think KDE 4 as a issue or I have a setting
wrong somewhere I do know the weather site uses java so most likely
java is causing the "issue". It to uses a lot of CPU when loading.
So, it may be java or it could be something else. I went to the site
you linked, it seemed to work fine with Seamonkey 2. It also worked in
Firefox and Konqueror. Is there a specific thing that you go to or just
the site in general? I wasn't logged in, just browsing as a guest.

Some of the animated gifs can start eating up resources. Over-elaborate
avatars can also have the same effect and when people start using both gifs
and flash animations the there may be a combination that causes the problems
you describe. Anyway, just an idea. Try it with an old machine and see if
the symptoms get worse/sooner.

That's worth persuing. I thought of two things that triggers the crash, it's
just not predictable:
1. Edit a reply and click "Post reply"
2. Click on the next page.
It's always one of those two things just before a freeze, which seems
significant.

No flash, but there is a usual amount of animated gifs and javascript. Nothing
over the top, just normal stuff for a forum. And this is the only forum of
many where this happens.
I've disabled js for the domain, I'll run it for a few days and see what
happens. I fear konqueror may go the way of amarok, and be replaced by rekong.

No java at all. I did forget to mention the two things that provoke it, there
always one of them immediately before a crash:
click on a link or go to next page
click "post reply" after composing a response

I did click around on the site earlier but I'm not registered to do
anything else. I just went back and tried to navigate a bit more. I
went to a thread then clicked to go back to the main page. Dicks hat
band could not have done it better. That thing locked up like a whore
on the front row. lol It was a 53% loading and trying to get something
that is 18.9Kib. It's been a couple minutes now and it is still sitting
there. I'm thinking that only a kill -9 will make this "whore" move
again. Please excuse my humor.
So, whatever it is, it affects us both. This is what I have:
root@smoker ~ # eselect java-vm list
Available Java Virtual Machines:
[1] sun-jdk-1.5 system-vm
[2] sun-jdk-1.6
!!! Warning: VMs marked as Build Only may contain Security
Vulnerabilities and/or be EOL.
!!! Warning: Gentoo recommends not setting these VMs as either your
System or User VM.
!!! Warning: Please see http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml#build-only
for more information.
root@smoker ~ # eselect java-nsplugin list
Available Java browser plugins
[1] sun-jdk-1.5
[2] sun-jdk-1.6 current
[3] sun-jdk-1.6-plugin2
root@smoker ~ #
Pardon the error message. Got to check into that I guess. Might be why
my weather site ain't working right.

I fear the worst :-)
I see KDE-4.4.1 just showed up in the tree and the Changelog has some
interesting javascript-related bugs fixed. So what I'm gonna do is rebuild
this latest KDE and see if that makes a difference. If not, disable $STUFF one
at a time. If that doesn't work, I shall have to change a 6 year browsing
habit :-(

It may be safe to fear the worst. I updated mine last night so I
thought I would try it again with the updates. Last time it locked up
at about 53%. Well they did improve it a little bit at least. It now
hangs at 66%. So we have a 13% improvement.
Hey, maybe with the next updates it will work all the way to a page
load. Also, if you file a bug report somewhere, I got to the site,
click on a thread then try to go back to the home page by clicking on
the link in the top box. So far, it has not been able to get past that
point. Oh, my CPU is at 100% doing whatever it is doing.
Now to go do a kill on Konqueror.

FWIW I just tried it in Konqueror 4.4.0 on Windows XP (work computer)
and, while it didn't use any noticeable CPU, Konqueror did get stuck
on a blank page spawning dozens and dozens of kwalletd and kioslave
processes for about 2 or 3 minutes, and then suddenly the page
displayed and everything settled down, back to normal. It seems random
but has happened every couple pages while clicking around in the site.
Weird.

Well, I'm using Konqueror 4.3.5 and tried to navigate around the forums and
click on the top link to go to the home page like Dale did. I tried this a
few times on a PIII laptop, which is of course slow, but it did not get stuck.
So, I guess it works here ...
