I found this to be the best page since it talks about building a kernel in pretty good detail. Chapter 4: Configuring and Building It even has pictures to help give a clearer picture and even shows different ways of doing the same thing. It even shows how to do this in a GUI. Do we really not have to do make modules_install any more? Dale :-) :-)
