I for example ended up with a GUI but no mouse or keyboard. So, just because something works for you does not mean it works for everybody else. Re-emerging xorg-server with hal disabled works just fine so I and a few others are not using hal. I don't know if this will help the OP or not but it is worth a try. Dale :-) :-)
