can I give them a try in xfce4?

To do it on the system level, create
/usr/local/share/cursors/xorg-x11/default/ and drop an index.theme file
in there:
$ cat /usr/local/share/cursors/xorg-x11/default/index.theme
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=gentoo-silver

I just used mkdir as root and it's working for a non-root user.
