I am reaching out to the community in search of someone, or someone
who may know someone at either TEL-X (http://www.telx.com)
or 56Marietta (http://www.56marietta.com). I'm sure everyone on this ML
is aware that wiki is down. It may not concern some of you, as
it is not an official documentation site; but for the rest of us, it is
a very helpful resource. You can read the current status of the wiki as
thrasher7 (Mike Valstar - mikevalstar<REMOVEME>@gmail.com) blogs it. Our
options are stated, but we hope to find another through
this e-mail. If anyone has any sort of contact with anyone at either of
these locations, please let me or Mike know.
Thanks in advance,
deface

The wiki can still be accessed via Google's cache.

The Gentoo-Wiki and Gentoo-Portage pages are unofficial, but it would be
very nice if Gentoo was able to provide its own wiki service (and
Gentoo-Portage-like thing, packages.gentoo.org is nowhere near as
useful), possibly working with Mike on an official basis. I've always
been curious why the Foundation is passing up a great opporitunity to
have a lot of good, community based documentation especially for
projects and setups that Gentoo itself does not provide documentation
for, as well as an easy frontend for reading all about different ebuilds.
I am unfortunately unable to help with this predicament though plan on
putting in a donation once the sites are up. It does appear he was able
to get in touch with TelX so hopefully everything gets up and running
quickly.

I would second all of this I use gentoo-wiki almost everyday and it is
killing me that it isnt up. I think this would be a great service if
we can give it to the community.

They have a nice little site up at the www.gentoo-wiki.com site with all the grewsome details of what is going on.
So as he said, please go there for the latest news.
Looking forward to the new site, and restoration of www.gentoo-portage.com, a site I find to be extremely useful. :->

The domain name is not down, it just doesn't point at the wiki. I'm
looking at it now.
But summary:
"everyone in this whole mess is at fault". No indication if and/or when
the equipment will be "rescued" from coloc site; most recent content
backup is from March; hosting providers bickering at each other and
neither willing to help gentoo-wiki's admin get his data.
Gentoo-portage should be up tommorrow, gentoo-wiki will be back
eventually, but all content on both sites is probably gone forever.

What I want to know is why there are no off-site backups.
The site is on a machine that is rented from somebody else who hires rack
space from another party. This is just begging for a disaster, or data being
held hostage. Which is what happened according to the write up at that
address. It's also a single point of failure.
I have a response to that site owner and most here are not going to like it:
You are an idiot. This is an elementary error and you fully deserve what has
happened. Now stop whinging about how the big bad nasty terrible person is
treating you and actually take some responsibility for your own mistakes.
Wasn't this wiki also 0wned and defaced sometime in the last year?

"Just thought I would summarize for everyone who doesn't want to read
all of the below stuff: everyone in this whole mess is at fault; I
personally failed to do proper backups, TelX was a dick about billing
and has been extorting customers, And Skiplink handled the situation
VERY poorly on the customer service end IMHO."
You're a bit late to the blame party.

Well, there are backups until March, and Google cache still holds
something. I had a similar failure on a wiki I was managing some time
ago -it was wiped away in the scribblewiki.com disaster. However thanks
to Google/MSN/Yahoo caches and internet archive, I was able to save
something.
If people go *now* and save caches of what they care about, maybe we can
save some brick from the pile of rubble. I personally saved the google
cache of a bunch of pages on the Macbook, since I need them :)

The offsite backups, were actually on another server, on another link...
inside the same company. but yes, we are making the necessary provisions
this time around to suite the backups
