Hi,

Actually i'm a newbie to Linux world but my final year project requires me to use Gentoo Linux as my platform. So can u assist me the easiest way to install Gentoo Linux 2007.1 and how to install stage3 as currently my pc is running windows xp and i would like to overwrite my windows with Gentoo Linux.

Norman,

I believe that's a really good project =).

Let me introduce you to "Gentoo".

Gentoo is (in my opinion) one of the best documented Linux
distribution. You can check the Gentoo Handbook [1], which is a very
good step-by-step guide to install Gentoo on your system. It's
translated into German, English, French, Italian, Polish, Simplified
Chinese and Spanish. Take a look at it, I think that will answer your
question. If you have any other questions after reading the Gentoo
Handbook, we will be glad to answer you.

By the way, you may want to just shrink your MSWindows partition with e.g. 
gparted LiveCD and then create new partitions to install Gentoo in.  This 
will allow you to multiboot into either OS.  A common data partition will 
allow you access to your data files, music, etc. by both OS too.

As Ricardo says, following the handbook is the best way to install Gentoo.  
Then read some of the documentation for setting up and configuring a desktop, 
or different services if you want to.  Any questions just ask in this M/L, 
the forums and in IRC.

Can u assist me or explain more detailed how do i shrink my MSWindows and
how do i create new partitions to install Gentoo so that i can do multiboot
into either os? and also about the common data partition.

My way of shrinking MSWIndows OS partitions:

1. Move all data files from C:\ drive, where MSWindows usually saves files as 
a default (e.g. from My Documents, My Music, etc.), to a CD/DVD/fileserver.
2. Delete all *.tmp files under C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local 
Settings\Temp, stale image files, etc.
3. Defragment the C:\ drive, reboot and defragment once more.
4. Use Gparted to shrink the C:\ drive partition to something between 12 to 
15GB.
5. Boot into MSWindows, which may well run chdisk - let it finish.  Then go to 
Administrative Tools/ Disk Manager and create a new data partition, but leave 
enough space on the disk for the Gentoo partitions (min 10G).  The new data 
partition can be formatted as ntfs or msdos.
6. Move all your data files from the CD/DVD/fileserver into the new partition.  
Change all MSWindows applications default paths to save their new files into 
your new data partition, instead of C:\ - otherwise you will soon run out of 
space on your C:\ drive.

For getting gparted go to http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php download 
the iso and burn a CD image.  If you would prefer using a LiveUSB and your PC 
can boot from a USB drive, then follow the link to the LiveUSB in the gparted 
website.

Then follow the Gentoo installation handbook for creating the Gentoo 
partitions while booted into the gparted LiveCD if you wish, or boot using 
the Gentoo LiveCD and use fdisk to create the new partitions exactly as the 
handbook describes.

Multibooting can be achieved in different ways.  If your linux installation is 
to become permanent then follow the Gentoo handbook to install Grub in the 
MBR of the hard disk and configure your /boot/grub/grub.conf as shown in the 
handbook for chainloading the WinXP OS.

Alternatively, if your MSWindows OS is permanent and your Linux installation 
is temporary, you will need to install Grub into the partition boot sector of 
your Linux OS (either the /boot partition, or if you do not use a separate 
boot partition then use your root partition) and follow the instructions 
under the section "Getting NTLDR to Load Linux" in this link:

The link describes the LiLo boot manager, but the principles are the same as 
far as MSWindows is concerned.  You can google for "chainload Grub using 
NTLDR" or similar to find the same approach but using Grub as the linux boot 
manager.

I'm planning to install Gentoo Linux and i want to overwrite my current MSWindows because i don't to do multiboot. How do i actually do so that i can install it.

I have no experience in installing any Linux Distro. =)

Of course I have to write that you need to be sure this is really what
you want, just in case.

I've just checked and there is a section on removing all partitions from
a disk in the handbook so you should be able to work it out :)

hi...I have one problem,after boot my Gentoo liveCD,after i chose to boot for the kernel and hardware,after the gui appeared and also progress bar until it finished boot the system,suddenly my monitor goes to standby mode,i'm wondering why is this happen.

Sounds like a problem with it detecting your video card or your monitor.  I'd suggest doing the text-based install instead.

You'll need the minimal install cd.  See:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap2-
the handbook covers both the liveCD install and the minimal cd
install.

The text-based install is not automated like most of the gui installer. The
text-based install does not give you a bootable, gui-based system; you have
to build it yourself.  But I assure you, you will learn a lot more by doing
so, and you'll have a lean system built to the way you want it.  This used
to be the only method for any install until the gui installer came along.

I've just installed my Gentoo 2007.0, and i want to enable the hald services before i can run the removable device aplication and i need to use kernel 2.6

Can anyone assists how to enable this services and how to load the kernel 2.6 so that i can connect my external harddisk.

I don't understand what you ask? You can start hal with
"/etc/init.d/hald start" and with "rc-update add hald default" you can
make it start when the PC boots. The kernel will be load when you
start your system.

  My questions from my previous  email was when i want to open Removable Media application there is a popup telling me that Volume Management is not supported and asked me to enable hald services.

Yes,i can the icon but i cannot open it,after i click it nothing happen. Is it i have to Run "mount" and "dmesg" using terminal? i'm using Gnome desktop manager,the id stated is "1000". 

Before that, when i boot my liveCD during installation i booted using "gentoo nox". Actually can you explain bout "nox" because if i don't boot using "nox" there will be problem with my video card.

"id" should tell you a bit more. It should be something like:
uid=501(user) gid=501(user) groups=501(user),80(admin)

To make automount work, you need to be a member of a couple of groups.

Hi,
adding yourself to the "disk" group will give you acces to disk device and
adding to the "plugdev" group will grant you can use hald.
I think this should do the trick.

You need to be at least in the plugdev, cdrom, cdrw and usb groups to
take the advantage of hal and mount external devices.

I have grouped it in the plugdev,cdrom,cdrw and usb groups but still i cant  
open my external drive and i've noticed that i also having problem to open 
my cdrom after i double click the icon nothing happen.

i'm having problem to mount cdrom,cdrw,usb.i have group my user account to all these groups and i can see the icons of cdrom,cdrw,usb but once i double clicked to open it nothing happen. I suspect there is mounting problem to these three drives.

Maybe you have to check your fstab (posting it here might be a good
idea). If that is right, then you should try to mount those drives
manually and see the result.

First understand one thing: The terminal is always a good friend :-)
Second, let's explain the fstab: Fstab (filesystem table) is a table
with all the specification for you filesystem. Check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fstab. To check the content of fstab just
type this on you terminal:

$ cat /etc/fstab

(and paste here the result of this command)

Third, to mount manually a device, you need to know first which device
is what on your Linux. Usually, cdrom is some /dev/hdc thing. Then, to
mount it:

$ mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

The strange things is: How did you installed gentoo without knowing
this issues? :-)

I have checked the content of fstab and this is the result:

/dev/hda1          /boot    ext2    defaults         1  2
/dev/hda2          none             swap      s  w         0  0
/dev/hda3          /        ext3    noatime          0  1
none             /proc     proc    defaults   0  0
none             /dev/shm  tmpfs   defaults   0  0

Honestly, at first when i installed gentoo,i just installed it by using the handbook and i thought it will be no problem. Actually this is my first time using Linux and i never have any experience using it before.

I am glad to know that you have chosen Gentoo as your first contact
with GNU/Linux. First of all, congratulations! having a working Gentoo
system without any previous Linux knowledge is a terrific start!

I assumed that you knew what fstab is and how to modify that file
because it is explained in the Gentoo Handbook, which is the reference
to install this distribution.

As explained in the Gentoo Handbook chapter 8 [1], you manually
created a text file under "/etc" called "fstab". This simple text file
contains all the necessary information to, let's say "auto-mount" your
different devices.

i've grouped it into plugdev.

Richard,

After i type this command "/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom      auto      noauto,ro,user     0 0" it shows:

                bash: /dev/cdrom: Permission denied
i've login using root account. i've right clicked at the cdrom to see the properties and under Permissions tab the Owner column stated unknown and i tried to change the Access column to Read and Write it popup "The permisions could not be changed"

Norman,

Good, you did it, you mounted your cdrom. That message is just a
warning, and it is only extra information that the "mount" command
shows you, so you do not have to face any surprises.

That warning is only telling you (as I said before) that your cdrom is
a read-only media.

If you want cdrom to automatically mount when you insert a cd, just
add this line to your /etc/fstab:

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom      auto      noauto,ro,user     0 0

And that should work just fine.

Yes, I know. That is how it is explained as an example in the Gentoo
Linux Handbook Chapter 8 [1] and it has worked for me so far. I am
sure that you could specify one file system type, but I am not too
sure if this really works at any case because a DVD could not follow
the ISO 9660 standard. As far as I know, some DVD's use the UDF
format.

Yes, what I wrote what "auto" is for. "mount" will find out wether the media 
is iso9660 or udf, but it will _not_ cause the media to be mounted 
automatically when inserted, as you wrote previously.

But believe it or not, that way works fine for me. I insert a cdrom
and gets automatically (or automagically maybe) mounted.

I do not know, maybe is something about Gnome, but have no idea.

 From what I recall, it takes hal and one other program to automount a 
CD, DVD, etc.  I use hal and ivman myself.  I think supermount or 
something like that was another way but if I recall correctly supermount 
has sort of fell off the map.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here.  It's been a while and sort of 
missed a lot of changes.

It only works if mount can figure out what the actual fs is at mount 
time. It does this by examining all known variations on the idea of a 
superblock. As long as a sane fs is in use, mounts invariably figures 
it out correctly.

btw, all dvds use UDF, ISO9660 is a cd fs

Wrong:

UDF is just one filesystem amongst others and ISO-9660 is a general standard.

In special: Video DVD players do not even need to understand  UDF at all. They 
just search the first 1000 sectors for the *.IFO file signature and depend on 
the internal IFO structures.

These days it's much more common to let the desktop do that step for 
you. With a properly setup desktop, you can remove all references to 
cdroms and thumbdrives from fstab (leave only permanent mounts for 
disks etc in there) and rather use the icon that pops up on your 
desktop when you insert a usb drive.

This works because fstab has no special qualities - it's just a list of 
standard drives you want to have mounted on your computer.

What desktop do you use? I'm betting it's either gnome or kde

What command produced this error, and what user did you run it as? 
(whoami will tell you this if you are not certain if you are root or 
not). Then run the id command with the name of that user as argument 
and post the output back here.

Chances are you are doing it as a regular user who is not a member of 
the plugdev group

Norman,

I guess that when you mounted manually, you did it as root.

Linux is very safe, and won't let you do anything if you do not have permission.

To set which user can and can not do certain things, there is
something called "groups".

Your user belongs to a group, and then it can do certain things, like,
for example, accessing your cdrom, playing audio, using usb, etc.

You can see a good explanation of this at chapter 11 of the Gentoo Handbook [1].

So, my guess is that when you created your user for daily use, you did
not include it in the "cdrom" group. Just type:

$ groups

As user to see which groups is your user in.

For example, this is my user and the groups it belongs to:

ric@tux ~ $ groups
wheel floppy audio cdrom video games usb portage plugdev ric

If you want to add your user to a new group, for example cdrom, do the
following:

1 - Check which groups you already belong with:
$ groups

(NOTE: you can skip this step, but it is useful to know which groups
are you already in.)

2- Log in as root.

3- Add your user to a new group with:

# usermod -a -G [goups] [user]

For this example, supposing your user is "norman" and you want to add
it to the cdrom group then:

# usermod -a -G cdrom norman


And that should be all.

[gentoo-user] Mounting problem

Hai all,

Is it normal after gentoo installation we have to mount the cdrom or even thumbdrive manually? Actually i'm still having problem until now, i have grouped my user account into cdrom,cdrw,usb,plugdev but i cant automount my cdrom. But if i mount it manually there is no problem at all.

if i type these commands:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro,user 0 0

the output will be:
bash: /dev/cdrom Permission denied

And also even if type these commands:
/dev/cdrom

the output will be still the same.

I'm out of idea how to make it works. And i more question how do i mount my thumbdrive?

By using your favorite text editor. Or with the "echo" command:

echo "/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro,user 0 0" >>/etc/fstab

This will append the line to the file, but be careful, it must be ">>". If you 
miss one and type ">" the file will be overwritten and the previous contents 
are lost.

Hi all,

I have problem regarding mounting my usb thumbdrive. I have tried to add this line to /etc/fstab:

echo "/dev/usb /mnt/usb auto noauto,rw,user" >>/etc/fstab

After i mount it:
mount /dev/usb

It shows there is no mount point for /dev/usb

I wonder is it this is the correct line that i should put into /etc/fstab?

Or should i post the output of dmesg here?

Here it states that it has the /dev/sda1 node

So the correct line for fstab is left as an exercise.

And some warning in advance:
The device node may change if you use multiple thumbdrives.

For giving the thumbdrive a permanent node, refer to some HowTo on 
writing udev rules.

According to this if  you want to mount tour USB drive, you should use
/dev/sda1 instead of /dev/usb

That is likely to break if he puts two usb devices in the system and 
inserts them in the wrong order to what he usually does....

Rather mount by fs LABEL on the device or it's GUID. First column 
in /etc/fstab:

LABEL=MY_FS_LABEL
GUID=VERY_LONG_GUID_GOES_HERE

Personally, I feel fstab is the wrong place for pluggable filesystems. 
Rather use automounting daemons like ivman, or the desktop environment, 
for this purpose and leave only fixed disks in fstab that are not 
likely to change

but ivman does it in kind of a dumb manner:
plugin first usb drive -> mount point /mount/sda*
plugin second usb drive -> mount point /mount/sdb*
unplug both
plugin second usb drive -> mount point /mount/sda* !

This can get confusing, if do not always use GUIs.

If you give udev a rule to symlink the thumbdrive to something like 
/dev/first and add a line /dev/first /media/first, ivman will always use 
that mount point.

If you have your boot partition on a thumbdrive you will appriciate this 
behavior.

I have '/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb auto noauto,user,umask=000 0 0'.
This is ok as long as I use only 1 USB stick at the same time:
Udev creates  /dev/sdb1  when the stick is inserted
& would create  /dev/sdb2 etc  if there were  > 1 ,
so that would require additional lines in 'fstab'.

I 'mount /dev/usb1 /mnt/usb' from the root command-line:
there is already a dir  /mnt/usb , which I created earlier,
& 'umask=000' in 'fstab' ensures I can access the stick as user.
Once I have mounted the stick like this,
I can read/write to it from my user's command-line or use Krusader with it.

You have already edited /etc/fstab during installation, the procedure is
exactly the same.

nano -w /etc/fstab

Which desktop are you using? KDE handles this automatically, for anything
else you should install ivman.

Actually, the line

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom      auto      noauto,ro,user     0 0

is what you need to add to "/etc/fstab" to get your cdrom working.

Well, you can not change permissions to read and write, because the
cdrom is a read-only media. Yes, I know you are able to burn a CD or a
DVD, but it is not considered as writable media and it is mounted as a
read-only file system.

Just try by adding that line to your fstab, and if that does not work,
then try to mount it manually as Eduardo Otubo says:

# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
