Hi folks,
About KDE 4.0.0.
I have formerly reported that konsole would crash on startup and kamil would
not start at all. It's all solved by now.
The problem with konsole was all my fault. I crated the test user for KDE4
without a shell. ;-( Dunno, how this could have happened but it did. I gave
the user a shell, and konsole was happy afterwards.
Did an "emerge --update --deep --newuse world" after adding a couple of USE
flags. This resulted in 309 packages to be emerged. A revdep-rebuild
afterwards wanted to re-emerge another 9 packages. Did that, too. Now, kmail
will start from krunner without a problem (and without using kontact).
So the stumbling blocks for using KDE 4.0.0 as my default desktop have
disappeared. Unfortunately, I won't have much time tomorrow. So over Friday
and the weekend, I will try to make KDE4 my default desktop after backing up
all stuff like ~/.kde*.
This new desktop looks extremely interesting even without all the
functionality of KDE 3.5.x.
Finally, I am there!
Uwe
PS: It's impressive even with my shitty video sub-system that does not allow
for composite.

You shouldn't need to do that. I found when I went back to KDE 3.5
(because Claws Mail wasn't working) that it reset the .kde symlink to
point to .kde3.5 again.

<tongue-in-cheek>
Neil, you just did a bad bad bad thing.
You used the "should" word and trusted it. Tut, tut. Bad boy.
Surely I don't have to give you the "this is how software works" speech,
right?
:-)

I used the word, but it's up to the reader how much they trust it. I'm
just using it as a potential get-out clause ;-)

It must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Well, mine created a .kde4.0 directory too so it *should* work for the
rest of us. Used my get out of jail card too. :-p
Oh, my slide show doesn't work right with 4.0 so I'm sticking with 3.5.
Just going to wait a while longer yet. ;-)
