Hello everyone,
I understand that this topic is not exactly Gentoo related. It does
relate, however, to a Gentoo-ish way to solve the "issue".
This year I enjoyed much to follow the Formula 1 season, and I have
one problem with it: I have a TV set (actually I borrow it for the
day), but I have no access to Eurosport and thus I cannot follow the
Saturday Qualifications for each Grand Prix. I can follow them live
using the official Formula 1 website [1]. There are, however, no live
commentaries (live as in voice).
I searched a bit on the Internet and found the BBC Radio Station [2].
I have one single technical problem with it: it's "Available Online
(UK Only)". So, my questions:
Is there a way to make Opera or Firefox believe that I am located in
the UK? I am using (on a regular basis) the following environment
variables.
LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
Nonetheless, it seems to make no difference to either browser. Maybe
someone knows exactly how does BBC, or Google and other sites
proposing their web pages in your local language, determine your
location? For example, when accessing
http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox,net , it indicates me immediately
and correctly from what country I am accessing the site. When I enter
my IP address in the "CountryWhois" box, it is unable to identify my
coordonates.

[2] http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/sportsextra/schedule.shtml
Any suggestions - especially by Saturday :) - are welcome,
Liviu

I am already required to connect to the Internet through a transparent
proxy (educational environment). Is there any way to connect to BBC
through an anonymous UK proxy on top?

I doubt anything about their verification happens from the browser, it would
all be IP based. So bounce through a proxy in the UK.

It's determined based on your IP address. You can try it yourself at
http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_my_ip and
http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_ip .
This service locates not only the country, but also the city.
If you want to have an IP address in UK you will have to use a proxy in
UK. You can find a list of proxies at
http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/
You could also find another TV channel with live video and audio
stream. There is a list of TV stations at http://wwitv.com/
Cheers,
Renat

I went to that link above and it was not even close to me. I think it
may be about right for one of my ISP's addresses or something though.
Also, my old ISP didn't work right either. It said another state even.
How is that supposed to work anyway?

I used the service, and the service determines my location with the
utmost precision.
I tried the following trick: an "anonymizer". Basically, I accessed
web-based proxy services and in the dialog I inserted
http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_my_ip. The list:
http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Proxying_and_Filtering/Hosted_Proxy_Services/Free/CGI_Proxy//
The results:
http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/ is identified TX (Texas), United States.
http://anonymouse.org/ is identified as an anonymous proxy.
http://www.kproxy.com/ is identified B8 (Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur), France.
http://www.cooltunnel.com/ is identified GA (Georgia), United States.
http://www.iphide.com/ is identified TX (Texas), United States.
and finally what I wanted:
http://www.phproxy.org/ is identified H9 (London), United Kingdom.
Do you think on the day of the GP BBC will consider my location as
London? Does anyone know by any chance some other web-based proxy
services that would identify as from the UK?

Here I have a problem. I already connect to the Internet through a
transparent proxy managed by my University. I tried to use this proxy
planet2.manchester.ac.uk:3128, and that after having established
connection. However, any web page fails to download. Do you know if it
is at all possible to use the above UK proxy address on top of the
mandatory proxy address that I have to use to simply have an Internet
connection?

Again, my proxy problems: all content coming from the above site tries
to access some funny port, and both mplayerplug-in and
gecko-mediaplayer fail (when using either Opera or Firefox).
Regards,
Liviu

Nothing fundamental about a transparent proxy prevents going to another proxy.
Security conscious admins often do though.

I don't know, but the aforementioned site appears to sell the database,
so I bet they use a combination of heuristics and rote data collection
to build the info.

I ask because I have seen other sites that do something similar and
they never seem to be correct for me. Maybe it is because I live out in
the sticks. Heck, I'm still on dial-up but DSL is coming sometime soon.

It's something called GeoIP. Look it up in wikipedia. Even the webalizer (apache statistics
generator) package makes use of it.
