I see vmware-player has disappeared from portage. I did a quick search
and didn't find anything about why and haven't noticed it here. Is
there a URL to information on why it was dropped from portage?
Thanks!

It hasn't disappeared, it's been keyworded -* and the 2.0 ebuild has
been package-masked.
From /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
# Mike Auty <ikelos@gentoo.org> (24 Jun 2007)
# Masked for about a week, for testing
>=app-emulation/vmware-workstation-6
>=app-emulation/vmware-player-2
>=app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.16

Hello Michael,
a quick eix vmware-player reveals
ux2 ~ # eix vmware-player
* app-emulation/vmware-player
Available versions: 1.0.2.29634 ~1.0.3.34682-r1 [M]~2.0.0.45731
Homepage: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
Description: Emulate a complete PC on your PC without the
usual performance overhead of most emulators
on my machine. Seems to be there just fine.
C'Ya,
Jürgen

Whoops, sorry. It looks like you're right.
It seems my sync mirror has not yet been updated...
As for why it seems to have disappeared, see Neil's answer.
C'Ya,
Jürgen

This is strange. I synced a few hours ago and I get this:

If I use equery I get this error message:

Could it be that me and the OP got a bad sync or something?

Not only had vmware-player disappeared, but also vmware-server and
vmware-workstation.
I've just done a re-sync, and they seem to have been reinstated.
Cheers, Dave
