Ten days ago I upgraded the kernel to the newest version
(gentoo-sources). My machine (x86 laptop) was running
smoothly without shuting down the system for nine days,
then I rebooted my system and the disaster came.
(In the mean time I run emerge -vaDuN world command).
I really don't know, what's happened: the system hangs
every 15 minutes, most of applications don't work
properly (emerge, firefox etc.) and put out <Segmentation
fault>.
Several times I catch a message on the console, but
cannot read the whole thing, because of system reboot
(It was something like: BUG cannot handle kernel NULL
pointer...)

Does anybody suspect, what's the problem?

I include my .config file, lspci output and couple of
/var/log/messages.

Thanks in advance.
Marek Miller

To me, seems a lot like an hardware problem. Bad RAM or bad motherboard,
possibly a hidden defect triggered by a reboot too much...

Do the segfaults happen randomly or are they reproducible? (that is, if
you open a given app, does it ALWAYS segfault or it OFTEN segfault? and
does it happen immediately or after a random amount of time?)

Yes, it is a RAM defect. Is there a way to define upper limit of RAM, so
I can perform some back-up before
I take my laptop to a warranty service?

ha! good luck trying to compile the kernel with faulty RAM. Can you
remove one stick, or borrow some from a friend / other machine? That
might help with your backups...

Or, drop a Knoppix or a different more lightweight LiveCD in, do your back up
and then take it to the warranty service?

He could compile it remotely and then just copy it...

Of course you should not use the boot option "toram" and cache might be a
problem, too.

I'd recommend a Damn Small Linux (DSL) live cd (50MB) or UBS-Stick if you need
your optical drive to make the backup.

Alternatively you could remove the hdd from your laptop. Many computer stores
offer such a backup service.

I think, I have found a way to tell the kernel how much memory I have.
Simple
    mem=300M
appended to the boot command and all defunct RAM (above 300M)
is inaccessible. So far, my laptop works as if nothing has happened.
Linux's great.
Thanks for all for handful tips.

of course! it's funny how we all ran off thinking about recompiling
kernels and live cd's, when this is all you had to do. Such a simple
answer right in front of us...

sure is. try doing that in Winblows

you mean it was a handful because we gave you bogus ideas?! ;)

Funny thing is, I thought of it but since I never used it I couldn't
remember what the line was to boot with. Plus, so much has changed
until I didn't know if it was still a option or not.
