I just scanned through the output of those two commands and I believe I may have missed the IDE chipset. I'm going to try enabling it and see if that helps. As for the other two responses, I did compile ReiserFS directly into the kernel, and also tried changing the kernel line in grub.conf to read kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda3 with little success.
