Hello,

I just read on the gentoo-dev list that xmms is about to be removed, but it's probably the only sound player that I've used. Could someone recommend a good alternative. I'm rather surprised that no one wanted to maintain the packages.

Well, you can always use VLC. Or perhaps Rhythmbox.

If you are using KDE anyway, try amaroK and/or noatun.

I found noatun heavy on resources compared to xmms and amarok requires more 
than a 17M sources download.  Meanwhile, I noticed that xmms is now a 
blocker!?  Why's that?

Thanks Bo,  I remember reading the first thread some time ago.  I guess it's 
time to move on.  Just emerge amarok and it looks great!  Tried to play a 
stream and it fell apart:

Plays OK for me.  Bring up the play list, click "Add->Radio Stream",
enter the URL.  The right click on the new radio stream, and do
"Load".  That should give you a "from live.str3am.com/"  in the play
list, click on it and hit play.

I recommend the use of the xine engine in amarok.  There are no real
plugins to speak of that you need, although I do have the following

Thanks Richard.  I think I have found a bug - or double-click doesn't always 
work as expected.  It seems that this is coming up as an intermittent error.  
Anyway, assuming that I have now played this stream and I would like to add 
it to one of my Playlists, how do I do that?

I just add them under "Radio Streams" in the playlist window.

But it would be nice if Musicbrainz support was put back in. This was
removed because of security problems with tunepimp-4, but Amarok now
supports tunepimp-5 which addresses that.

Hm. How do you make amarok use the xine engine? As far as I can
tell, there's at least no USE flag for this, is there?

audacious is a bmpx fork which is a xmms fork
you can try both

I've never been an xmms fan, the GUI has just never felt right,
something about the app didn't suit my tastes. I've been use mpg123,
mplayer and mpd depending on what I want. Though apparently we should
be using amarok so I'll have to give that a whirl.

Anyway, I don't know if you know last.fm (you could take a look), but
Amarok's integration with that site is wonderful. You could (now could,
not should neither must) try dynamic reproduction list, rating,
taggin', etc...

I was a diehard XMMS fan. Then I noticed news about its imminent death, 
and I sadly looked for alternatives. I once did *hate* players like 
amaroK, but in its latest version is a killer app.

It just works, and works well. And simple features like instant search, 
wikipedia search and shuffling become rapidly interesting.

The only downside is a small memory leak that becomes noticeable after a 
few days.

I'd love an XMMS with amaroK features, or better an amaroK with a deep 
XMMS look-n-feel.

I second that. My search for the ultimate music player has stopped
with Amarok. Absolutely brilliant. Name a feature- lyrics? wikipedia
integration? It's got it.

Hi, I'm new to the list but have been lurking for a while... so forgive 
the slightly long post (bits of 'background' included to put things in 
context)

I tried to get on with Amarok - I tried on my Ubuntu install before I 
discovered Gentoo... thought I'd be bound to get it working with Gentoo 
but couldn't... and tried Rhythmbox in desperation to have something 
play music.

 From what I've seen of Amarok, I'd love it, but I every time I've 
installed it I've run into the same problems:

All our music (about 80 Gb, I think, mainly (but not all) OGG files) is 
stored on a server, accessed on a mounted Samba share.  The share would 
mount correctly - and I tried mounting it with a variety of permissions 
set - but I couldn't get Amarok to 'read' the music collection 
successfully.  I read various man/wiki/help pages which were supposed to 
get it working but I couldn't - and when Amarok bombed out it would take 
the system with it - things would lock up and I ended up have to reboot 
(!) and/or have major problems getting sound to work at all (it seemed 
to come and go, almost without reason).

I'm a relative newbie with linux and have only had my gentoo install up 
and running for about a month now... but I have managed to get most 
other things sorted by *lots* of reading/Googling.  I started off with 
kde, removed that (despite really giving KDE a really good go, I still 
wanted to go back to my Gnome comfort zone!) and installed gnome-light,  
unmasked the ~x86 packages that gnome-light pulled in and upgraded 
them... and sound works at last.  And Rhythmbox works - but I don't like 
it (never have).  I had xmms on my Ubuntu install... and had emerged it 
(now unmerged) to use with Gentoo... and would love to have a simple, 
working Amarok... but I haven't got my bravery together to embark on 
trying again!

I can't help thinking the problem lies with my (lack of) understanding 
of samba - our Squeezebox serves up the music from the samba share 
beautifully - so I'm not sure what I'm getting wrong in how I mount the 
share (mounting exactly the same way is fine for Rhythmbox) for Amarok 
to read.  Maybe I'll have another go one day soon!  If anyone has any 
hot tips or pointers that might help, I'd be grateful - I think I'll 
tear all my hair out if I try to emerge it again and end up with big 
problems with my system (I so want to avoid a problem that I'll be doing 
a full system backup before I have a go).

I wouldn't vote for rhythmbox.  I might try audacious instead.  But I'd 
really like a working amarok!

I had my music collection mounted over nfs and I ran into a similar
problem: amarok wouldn't be able to read the entire thing and the nfs
shares would stop working.

The problem turned out to be that amarok keeps all these files /open/
and the remote share runs out of resources.  I'm using audacious now
without problems.

Are you sure that Amarok keeps the files open? This would break even
on a local filesystem. I am currently listening to music via Amarok
and lsof shows only 1 audio file open - the one it is playing.

It seems amarok is a little picky about this.
http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Samba

You should be aware that amarok opens all files to read the metadata (tags) 
when you add them to the collection. This is done just once, after that all 
the metadata is stored in amaroks database.

I have a setup similar to yours, down to the use of Squeezebox. The
only difference is that my collection is smaller and of mp3's rather
than oggs. Amarok seems to have no real problems with the share.

FWIW, here's the relevant entry from my /etc/fstab (all one line in
the original):

There's another possible solution, which is to set up an iTunes server
on your filserver machine. I have mt-daapd, the opensource iTunes
server, running on my fileserver, so that my wife can easily administer
her iPod using WinXP and iTunes.

Your music on the iTunes server is then also accessible in recent
versions of amarok in the "Media Devices" tab.

It appears that mt-daapd supports ogg (although iTunes qua iTunes
doesn't).

Do you still have xmms in your USE line in make.conf?  I had to remove
mine, and replace with -xmms, when the error you have came up.  Then I
had to do a emerge -Nuv world to recompile a few packages that the
change affected.

Not exactly.  It says no xmms, but the '*' also says the flag state
has changed since the last time you merged the package.

Kopete is a dependency of kde-meta, unmerge it and emerge world will
just try to pull it back in, along with its dependencies. You need to
re-emerge Kopete after removing xmms from your USE flags.

There are AFAIK two apps, Bluemote and BlueAmarok out there, I have used both. But I
think they have a fairly strong dependency on Sony Ericsson menu extensions.

It seems to me that audacious is functionally equivalent to xmms, down to 
having the same command-line controls. I'd try "ln -s /usr/bin/audacious 
/usr/bin/xmms" (after unmerging xmms and emerging audacious), and see if 
it all works.

  amarok ==> Even worse than xine.  It's a Windows Media Player wannabee
bloated frontend that ends up launching xine.  In addition to building
xinelib, it also builds kde-base, ruby, and a bunch of other junk.

It hasn't been supported for a long time. That said there is a new
maintainer who just took it over last week so don't give up totally on
alsaplayer. It was good for its day.

Again, I mentioned this before, but if your interest is file based
playback - no CDs - no streaming media - then there is hardly anything
better than Aqualung. It's in the proaudio overlay - both the release
versions and a CVS ebuild also.

it was great for testing dmix and hardware mixing - having 8 instances of 
alsaplayer playing the same song with ca 10 seconds difference.. without 
skips...

I would second that.

I have not tried xine, but dislike the "size" of amarok. Audacious 
builds quickly and plays mp3s - and thats all I need!

Incidentally xmms and audacious both seem to sound cleaner than amarok too.

I emerged audacious last night.  I've been an xmms user since I started
using Linux back in 2003, so I wanted something xmms-like.  I like
audacious except for one tiny detail; the GUI window is tiny and I can't
seem to make it bigger.  Whenever I click the area that made xmms
bigger, it just tells me that DOUBLESIZE IS NOT SUPPORTED.  Will it be
in the future?

Just adding my $0.02, here.  I've tried both wmp and Amarok (among other
free programs).  Just my opinion, but wmp is a piece of crap - I've
never used it - after I tried it, even on my windoze systems.

OTOH, Amarok is a very good program (again my opinion), and it will
likely only get better.  Can you tell I chose Amarok to replace Xmms?

there is only one(!) kde-package. kdelibs. That is not 'most of KDE'. kde-env 
is just a bunch of files. from esearch: Sets up some env.d files for KDE

And about xine - you don't need xine. you can use gstreamer, if you want. xine 
is just the easiest to use and best performing engine.

I agree with this. Amarok is not good replacement for xmms. It has
another philosophy which is similar to Windows Media Player. It has
also much higher requirements for resources in runtime and also in
dependecies/build time. Especially for non KDE users.

tree. It has same philosophy as xmms.

But it missing several features. For me it is mainly gapless output,
xosd support and wide posibilites to control it via command line
(like xmms-pipe). Consider also tons of plugins for xmms.

I have emerged audacious to watch its development but I will stay with
xmms as long as it will be possible.

  Me too.  I use mpg321 to play music files on my harddrive.  I don't
need no steenkin gui for that.  mc is a great file-browser that can run
in a true text console or an xterm.  I have it set up to launch mpg321
when I press <ENTER> on an mp3 file.

  I have one other need for an audioplayer.  I'm a paying subscriber of
Live365, and I need a simple audio player to launch and play streams
direct off a .pls file.  audacious falls flat on its face in this task.
The current version (1.1.2-r1) does *NOT* support mp3, or streaming mp3.
It requires a plugin package.  The plugin package is keyword masked
~x86.  After unmasking the plugin package, I find that it requires a
higher version of audacious, which is also keyword masked ~x86.  Etc,
etc., etc.  Version 1.1.0 still supports mp3 directly, so I've
package-masked ">media-sound/audacious-1.1.0".  But wait... there's
more... on at least one Live365 station, audacious plays at half speed,
and the singer's voice is way down low.  xmms handles that station fine.

  I tried RealPlayer.  Unlike xmms and audacious, it can't keep up with
a 96 kbps audio stream, stuttering and buffering all the time.  This is
on an AMDK8 3000+ with 2 gigs of RAM, running Blackbox, not some
underpowered machine running a resource-hogging "desktop environment".

Hi,

I'm not familiar with Live365, but I listen to radio (http://kplu.org) 
and similar streams off the Internet sometimes, and I find that mplayer 
is more than up to the task, including dealing with pls files.

e.g.
$ mplayer http://www.abacast.com/media/pls/kplu/kplu-sc-48.pls

works for me every time.  I already have mplayer installed to watch 
DVDs, so it might as well serve another purpose.

Just a short addition:
for servers that bork the content type of the playlist, it makes sense
to include "-playlist" in that command, like this:

$ mplayer -playlist 'http://foo.bar/playlist.pls'

Just because *you* wouldn't use it, doesn't mean it's crap...
Just because *you* wouldn't use it, doesn't mean you have to badmouth it.

You seem to forget people spend time creating these great programs at no cost.
You don't insult the program, you insult the people behind it.

But even worse is that you based your *opinion* on a screenshot and the 
dependencies without even touching the program... and then tell the whole 
world it sucks.

If that's not an insult, I don't know what is...

Voicing an opinion is fine, but keep in mind that it *requires* you to have 
decent arguments to back you up, and it does *not* give you the right to be 
rude. If you feel the need to express thoughts outside that box, you should

I personally like and use amaroK, but if he feels it's a smoking pile of 
crap, it's in his whole rights to loudly say so. Many nice and helpful 
people end up coding piles of crap, the fact they are lovely people 
doing free software doesn't stops me to tell their program is a (free) 
pile of crap.

He doesn't like something with these dependencies and the interface 
depicted in the screenshot. So his comments are perfectly appropriate.

I think he implicitly meant "something about as lightweight and simple" 
by reading the word "alternative". And I feel he's quite right. I 
happily switched from xmms to amarok, but they are definitely not 
similar programs targeting the same audience.

  No such thing.  I was stating that amarok is extreme overkill for
simple streaming audio playing.  It is aimed at a totally different
target market.  I'm not slagging amarok for that, all valid markets
have the same right to be served.  But it simply doesn't belong in

  I didn't say it sucks, I said it was extreme overkill for replacing
xmms.  I believe the list of dependancies is a valid criterion to judge
a program by.  And I based my opinion on more than a screenshot.  I

point, it crosses the line of being too much.

both is OPTIONAL.

without xmms/libvisual, there is no eye-candy.

again, a lot of the stuff is optional. And the fact, that it has a 
dcop-interface, make it possible, to control it with scripts or from a 
command line.

I agree with this statement 'cause what I use xmms for I can't do in
amarok, and that is to play 'mod' files.

I took someone's suggestion and tried 'audacious'.  This was because the
package database said something about a 'pending removal' which I
interpreted to mean that xmms was being removed from the package database.

Despite the fact that I built audacious with 'modplug', which I assumed
(maybe wrongly) had something to do with playing 'mod' files, I couldn't
get it to play mod files.

So, I removed 'audacious' and reinstalled xmms. I unmasked (by
commenting the line out) xmms-1.2.10-r15, which is what I had been using
since approximately mid-August, with no problems with what I use it for.
 Granted, this version was masked by ~x86 keyword when I originally
installed it in August.

Anyway, with respect to the subject line, if my interpretation is
correct and xmms is being removed from the package list, what can I use
to play 'mod' files?

audacious with the media-plugins/audacious-dumb plugin?

or, emerge xine-lib with the modplug useflag (which has to be set for 
audacious too), and it can play mod files. And since amarok uses xine-lib as 
one of its engines, it would be able to play modfiles.

Thanks for this!  :-)  Stupid on my part, I suppose - I never thought of
compileing xine-lib with the modplug USE flag.  I just let it compile
with the defaults and/or what was in make.conf.

Anyway, now I'm happy.  No xmms, but I can play my mod files.  Only
complaint I have is that I liked the blur-scope visualization which I
got from xmms.  Funny think is according to package.mask,
xmms-blur-scope isn't even dependent on xmms.
