Hi all.

I've just put a twin monitor setup on my system, I have a problem that so far
I've not been able to fix. Once I run Xorg -configure and edited
/etc/X11/xorg.conf for the mouse and monitor resolutions both video card /
monitor setups seem to work fine. I then setup the KDE desktops and again
everything seems fine. However when I next boot up, the second desktop , on the
new video card / monitor, looses its settings and defaults to 400 x 300, with no
available options above this. If I then logout of KDE, shutdown the X server and
do the Xorg -configure bit again and then restart X everything is ok again until
the next time. The first desktop is always ok with no problems.

Setup.

Gentoo 2006
KDE 3.4.3
Matrox Millennium G400 AGP (using Matrox kernel modules)
Some unknown but pretty good monitor

Diamond Viper 550 PCI (using whatever X gives as I found no modules that seemed
  to be for this card)
Tatung monitor.

I know this isn't strictly Gentoo but the people on this list are clued up
kiddies so I'm hoping someone knows the answer to this one.

TIA

Stewart

I don't typically use the Xorg -configure option (I use vi!), but doesn't it
create a temporary xorg.conf file in root's home directory so that you can
test it? If it works then I would copy it from /root/xorg.conf (if it is
there) to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Hope it helps

Hi all.

I managed to get hold of some more AGP cards to try and I found the problem but
what causes it exactly is a mystery.

No matter what AGP card is fitted with the Viper v550 PCI card installed and I
tried a NVidia Geforce 3 and an ATI Rage 128 pro, the AGP card is always
detected as a NVidia Riva 128, which by the way has never been near this system.
Remove the Viper and the card is detected correctly. I can only assume that when
KDE started for the second time this mis-identification confused the hell out of
it and it took it out on the second desktop, the one connected to the Viper.

Now all I have to do is find a PCI card that works with other cards.

Use your favourite editor to manually enter the parameters for both
screens/devices. There are good instructions in this link:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dual_Monitors

and the man page for xorg.conf is well written to giude you through.
