I see that KDE 3.5 finally made it out of testing.  I plan to upgrade to 
it but since it is slotted, I'll have to unmerge 3.4 first.  No problem, 
but I think I will then have to recompile all non-kde but related apps, 
such a k3b, that were compiled against the old libraries.  Right?

Using "equery useflag kde", I found k3b and amarok (and gnome-libs ????).

So, my question is:  Is this all?  I can't believe these are all the 
semi-kde apps there are?  Does the fact that it does not use the kde 
flag guarantee that it does not need the kde libraries?

Course, I guess I could blithely go along and as apps crash, I'll find 
the others.

Just do a revdep-rebuild after merging 3.5 and unmerging 3.4 - that 
should rebuild anything that lost libraries.

because 3.5 has some bugs - and some people have less problems tolerate this

I must agree here. I have been using the 3.5 ebuilds since they entered the 
tree many months) on two systems.

I still consider it buggy, and am quite surprised they have gone "stable" in 
gentoo.

While they are not major issues, they are definately annoyances: One is that 
konqueror has an interestingly difficult time scrolling up and down pages if 
they have text boxes which are populated with text in them.

Another is that kmail crashes. A *LOT*. A minimum of two times a day on me, I 
have seen as high as five.

I do not consider 3.5 stable

It is a wise idea to use the slotting feature, and keep 3.4.

kmail crashes me a lot because of this:
it tries to fetch mails from a defunc server (it is still in the prefs, 
because it will be back in some weeks - and I don't know the pw anymore). 
When I close kmail, while it waits for the timeouts: crash
Or it won't really stop (kmail and kio_pop3 still visible in ps aux), 
advantage, when I start kmail again, I don't have to type in the 
kwallet-pw ... 

Oh, and logout most of the times only works on the second try ...

These are all probably useful... but not to the gentoo-user list.  If 
you want the bugs fixed, do go to http://bugs.kde.org/ and post them 
(check to see if they've already been posted first though eh?)  Only 
then will your problems get the attention they need.

You don't need to unmerge 3.4 _first_.  You can do it after you have
merged 3.5, although even then it is optional.

No, like all USE flags, the kde flag is only for *optional* kde
support.  There are some applications that will not work at all
without KDE, even though they are not part of KDE.  Those applications
will not have a kde use flag, but will bring in whatever parts of kde
they depend on.  Examples are koffice, kdevelop, kmplayer, kaffeine,
...

The whole point of slotting is that you *don't* have to unmerge 3.4
first. You can continue to use 3.4 while merging 3.5, then you'll be
given the choice of 3.4 or 3.5 in KDm's menu. Only unmerge 3.4 when
you're sure everything is OK with 3.5 and you no longer need it.

I'm just finishing emerging lots of updates and KDE of course. I'll tell
you. I've seen that KDE 3.5 is slotted, and I'd like to uninstall 3.4
version, but I've got installed non-monolithic package, so there are lots
of dependencies and apps that are not on kde-base, and I'd like to know
how to uninstall it succesffully.

It was released two days ago according to the KDE web site. I've been
using it since beta1 and it works well. From rc2 onwards it has been rock
solid.

I just did emerge --udpate --deep world. It slotted 3.4 and 3.5, so I 
first cleared out my distfiles to free up some space! Then, edited 
/etc/rc.conf to set XSESSION="kde-3.5". After restarting 
/etc/init.d/xdm, kdm-3.5 came up with entries for both 3.4 and 3.5. Some 
packages are still being compiled. I'll keep 3.4 till all of them are 
compiled and then unmerge 3.4.

3.5 is working just fine here. The only thing that went wrong is that it 
doesn't show my pop-up panel on the right hand side of the screen. The 
one at the bottom works just fine.

Actually, turns out that it was the moodin engine that required the 
rebuild. Rest were rather unnecessary. Anyway. I didn't try revdep-rebuild.

amaroK failed to compile with visualization support with KDE 3.5. 
Tellico failed as well. Mhmmm.

Just to make sure I get this right, when I upgrade to KDE 3.5, KDE 3.4
will still be installed right?  This is how it was done in the past but
I don't want to loose 3.4 until I get used to 3.5 and make sure it will
work OK.

I use kdm and can select what version of KDE I want to login to.  I also
used that to select between KDE, Gnome, IceWM etc when I was testing the
waters.  Just thought you would like to know that.  Kept me from having
to edit rc.conf to pick what GUI I wanted to use.

Correct. Just to be sure, do emerge -up kde first, and if NS (new slot) is 
before each kde package, you're ready to go. Also it's a good idea to do a :

cp -a /home/user/.kde3.4 .kde.old 

for a backup of your user configs. Maybe also back up a few config files 
in /usr/kde/3.4/share/config.  Really, upgrading to 3.5 is painless and 
simple.

Thanks for the info.  That was the way they did it in the past but I
wanted to make sure, you know, before I borked it up really bad.  If I'm
going to screw it up, I may as well know I'm going to do it good.  LOL 
Those back-ups sounds like a good idea.  I think it did it itself last
time though.  It was there at least and I didn't do it.  I was ignorant
then. 

Now to get OOo downloaded.  My ISP kicks me offline after 6 hours.  I'm
trying another number to see if it is any better.  If they don't fix it,
I may end up switching.  It's starting to get old.  I sent them a email
but have not heard back.  May have to call them.  They are just up the
street so I can go eye to eye if needed.  Hit them with a hammer to get
their attention.  o_O  Hit the server to if needed.  LOL

Yes, KDE is still slotted.

rc.conf doesn't set the GUI you use, it only sets which display manager
is run. The display manager is then used to choose the window manager.

OTOH, XSESSION tells which window manager to use as default for either xdm, 
startx or xinit.

That means if you use xdm as your display manager or no display manager at 
all, then setting XSESSION will be just fine. Other display managers like 
kdm or gdm let you choose which window manager to run at login time, so 
they don't need XSESSION.

Well, I use KDM and I click the menu thing to select what I want to
login too, or shutdown/restart.  I guess in good Linux tradition there
is more than one way to skin this cat.  LOL  Some more painful for the

Sorry, my reply was a bit confusing. I was referring to the
DISPLAYMANAGER setting and assumed you were, since you use kdm. If you
set the use of gdm or kdm in DISPLAYMANAGER then XSESSION is ignored, so
each user chooses their window manager when they log in. XSESSION is only
used with xdm or startx.

If you have an old monolithic KDE install (in my case KDE-3.2.x) and
would like to unmerge it along with all the kde 3.2.x packages and
exclusive dependencies to save some space, how would you do it?  How
could one ensure that there will be no apps/deps out there, which will
try to re-emerge this old version afresh?

would you?  I know there are a lot of packages but it usually takes me a
couple nights to get it all, like OOo does.  Sorry dial-up!!  I don't
want to try to unmask all that.  May bork something.  O_O  I am still

You won't bork anything by unmasking only. then use emerge -f to fetch
the files. Or download them from your nearest KDE mirror and put them
in $DISTDIR.

It is available but it is still masked.  I have heard of people
elsewhere that have it installed and it runs fine but the Gentoo folks
want to make sure before they mark it as stable.  There have been a few
people that complain when they release something that has a bug so they
are exercising a bit of caution.  I can't say I blame them either.  It
is a big update if you let it remove the old version during the install.

You can make it update by putting kde in your package.use file but it
may be best to wait unless you would be able to fix anything that
breaks, which is why I am waiting.  Chances are it will not hurt
anything but you never know.

As far as I know KDE 3.5 is considered stable but the ebuilds that 
install it in gentoo are not hence the ~arch keyword.

Once an emerge get into the portage tree, the standard (and rarely, if 
ever violated) waiting time before they become stable is 30 days.

I've installed a few kde-3.5 packages without problem.  I have a friend 
that's been running it since beta 2.  Since you seem to be very 
interested in this package, I encourage you to unmask it by adding 
'=cat-egory/package-3.5* ~x86' to your /etc/portage/package.keywords 
for each of the kde-3.5 packages you want to install.  With the new 
style meta ebuilds you can install package by package OR try and do the 
whole thing by emerging kde-meta.  You'll still have to add each 
package to your /etc/portage/package.keywords.

The whole point of ~arch is testing, bug reports will help refine the 
ebuilds.

(I just commented out packages I don't use or want).

Then, also add the unwanted packages to /etc/portage/profile/package.provided 
to stop emerge from trying to pull in the unwanted kde packages. Might be a 
simpler way, but this works for me. 3.5 goes in a slot, so your other kde is 
safe.

kde-base/kdeedu-3.5.0
kde-base/kdegames-3.5.0
kde-base/kdesdk-3.5.0
kde-base/kde-i18n-3.5.0
