This issue was found when I started to use gentoo again after around three
months. I remember that I updated some packages including the portage... the
system suspends with  "*no more* processes *left in this
runlevel*<http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Flists.debian.org%2Fdebian-user-catalan%2F2005%2F12%2Fmsg00168.html&ei=JRVvRIugEY78oQKRuZT3Bg&sig2=JMh6dJZsXqlJFzbvo8gPug>"
message. I have solved this problem by removing all files under /etc/ within
the package "baselayout", and re-emerge it. but I got another problem that
all applications failed to run and complained "error while loading shared
libraries: lib stdc++.so.5: cannot load shared object file: No such file or
directory", I had no idea and re-emerge gcc together with some other
updates, I could not reboot again!!!..  It makes me crazy. any  ideas
about  this problem... mm

I ran into that a good while back.  What I had was a blank inittab file
in /etc.  This is what should be in there:

I was lucky, I make a back-up of my /etc directory every once in a
while.  I just copied it back over.  I had to boot from the CD and mount
the root partition to do that though.

the inittab file is ok, really odd, I could not go back to the point where
the system was working, even I re-emerge the baselayout again. no idea about
this problem, though I've even checked all the stuff under init.d and conf.d..
so...  I really appreciate if there's any clue offered.

I think I have solved this problem, not completely though. again I removed
everything under /etc that belongs to baselayout, and re-emerge it, (I still
don't know what the hell had caused the problem!).  however, when I tried to
restore some of my startup scripts like "metalog, alsasound", gentoo
complains with message like this: "Could not *get dependency info* for XXX,
try to fix ..... please run depscan.sh .... " could not remember all words,
but depscan.sh seemed no use at all !
