Never ran a Mysql query that returned more results than would fit in ram 
have you?

kashani@azul ~ $ grep tmp /etc/mysql/my.cnf
tmpdir                                          = /tmp/

Not sure about other db servers.

Also Apache writes session date to /tmp and PHP pear stuff uses /tmp as 
well.
