Yes. "emerge sync" is what I do first. If your portage tree is old, then some rapidly-updating
packages may not have their files in the gentoo mirrors. patches usually come from gentoo mirrors,
and not form the official source for the package, which is usually tried after all your
GENTOO_MIRROR setup.

I'm trying to install squid but when I run emerge -v squid it eventually
fails after trying what looks like about a dozen sites.
--------------
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
13:11:20 ERROR 404: Not Found.
!!! Couldn't download squid-2.5.STABLE10-patches-20050519.tar.gz. Aborting
--------------
Is there a sort of normal way to proceed from there?
I know how to build it myself of course but I mean in keeping with other
gentoo tools so that gentoo knows what has happened.
Can I download the latest tar ball and give it to emerge or something
along that line?
