I've recently done an install based loosely on the 1/3 method but
using 2005.1 as the base. Everything works fine except for an error
message which I get on bootup. Every time I boot, I get the message:
cdrom: open failed
cdrom: open failed
I get the message twice as shown. I'm guessing I get the message twice
because I have 2 optical drives in the system. Based on when the
message pops up, it appears that the message is coming from /sbin/rc.
When I looked at the script, however, I can't find anything trying to
open a cdrom drive.
Some potentially relevent info:
Kernel: 2.6.13-ck5
GCC: 3.4.4-r1
glibc: 2.3.5
If anybody needs any additional info, I'll be happy to post it. I
didn't want to spam the list unnecessarily.
Thanks,
Carl

I always assumed that this message (which I have also seen on occasion)
is because
1) udev or /etc/fstab is attempting to mount the detected device
(normal), and
2) there is no media in the drive (since a removeable drive can't be
read to be mounted if there's no media present).
So I never thought there was anything to worry about in such a message.
Was I wrong?
Holly

I also get this message, despite not having set up my fstab to auto
mount the CDROM. So it shouldn't be a mounting error; probably it is
related to probing the device. Can't remember if there is a particular
kernel option that brings this about. Interested to know what it means.
